I have been playing drums lately again and I realized there is no other way around it, the only way to learn is to practice and hard. So I have been doing that and I have been learning pretty fast...any input?

Yeah, I played from 1st grade (5 years old or so?) straight through college. I probably averaged 4 to 6 hours of practice, teaching, and performing time per day for those 16 years. I knew my way around a set of drums, I guess. (Actually, it was my life.) What sort of input are you looking for?

Generally speaking, this is the way I see it...

Practice rudiments until you dream about them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_brIDjD ... re=related

If you want to know why, here's why: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXzvYcCb ... re=related

And then you can be a total badass and play the same stuff with Stanley Clarke: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Je_iqbgGXFw (Listen at 3:05 or so -- you'll hear Crazy Army again!! !)

There's also some inhuman rudimentary stuff in there -- like around 2:13; here it is broken down: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wl4DKmbf ... re=related (1/2 speed at 0:50)

And then take all that stuff and go way beyond being a total badass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48OwMVEt ... re=related

It's all just rudiments broken up between different drums or drums and cymbals. Sorry, I don't mean to beat a dead horse with him, but no one plays with the same feel as he does ... except maybe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGXGpa45 ... re=related (He makes it look as easy as drinking water... I guess he should; he's the most recorded drummer in history.)

He taught everybody how to play, from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwFdExvCxM4 to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14GYov0EdyQ

Basically, learn to keep good time -- that's all there is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrQINFko ... re=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74YDIyp2__I

You don't have to play what they do (no one can); you just have to play it the way they do, even if all you can manage right now is straight quarter notes. Good luck :thumright:

When you say you've been playing again, what does that mean? Did you play for a while and then stop? (Man, I wish I could get back into it -- really miss it -- but I can't find the time.) Are you playing with a band? If not, do you intend to? Style of music? How old are you (if you don't mind my asking)?

Hey, I was going to suggest to you that you listen to as much Steely Dan as you can. That's basically the gold standard of session drumming through the '70s and not much has changed. So I googled "drummers of steely dan" and came up with this: http://www.granatino.com/sdresource/md1.htm Interesting read on some of the most demanding studio sessions there ever have been. If you looked at the links in my last post, many of these names will be familiar.

Well I bought a set when I was 18 because I always wanted to be a drummer, after half assing it thinking I was trying my hardest I gave up because I wasn't where I wanted to be. Now I am nineteen about where I let off but trying a lot harder. Getting much better with little fills but never can do it one percent. I take influence off of grind/punk/hardcore bands plus of course my own little style and I take for everything I tiny bit. Been working on surf also.

I want you to know that you inspired me! After not playing for about 15 years, I am going to start again. It is the only thing that I have both really enjoyed and been good at in my entire life. Watching those videos I sent you links to, I asked myself, "why did I give this up?" At my age, it is smartest to concentrate on jazz. No one wants a 38-year-old punk drummer! I live in New York, so there is always a need for jazz drummers. Hopefully, I'll be back out and playing within a year or so. Maybe less. Everyone tells me that it comes back to you very quickly. Like riding a bike. Thanks for the topic, and good luck :thumright:

Here's one more link -- fabulous: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln6b_nBM-V8

I wish I had enough room to start playing on a kit again.

I took my grade one, 3 years ago and now I'm in a band, I really want to try and get practising again.

Below is my main inspiration to play. Superb.

That was pretty amazing.

What is grade one?
I don't think I am going to be taking lessons, I don't want to f**k up. I hate making mistakes.

haha touche

But I hate when other people watch me make mistakes. I would rather watch the mistake myself and learn from it but I might take one lesson or two since I now have the money. Face my fear of lessons.
