I tend to not like my songs being longer than a few minutes (unless it's progressive), I don't like them to use too many fillers or pads, and I like songs with interesting patterns and compositions. I also like songs which have a strong, robust sound, but not necessarily a "heavy metal" sound. I will occasionally listen to stuff which has progressive traits, but I mostly go for instant gratification. This is probably why I gravitate heavily towards old school video game, chiptune, and demoscene music

If you care to look, I have an example of what I listen to linked below:
Mr. Gimmick

With that being said, how about you?

I like my songs to either have a deep meaning or a story to tell. If it doesn't have one or the other, I wouldn't enjoy listening to it.

I used to have a strong affinity for 70s rock, but lately I've almost exclusively been listening to current progressive music.

I like my music to be aggressive, but not necessarily anything like angry metal. Just music that is the opposite of delicate.

I loathe most pop music because it is boring and repetitive. My music has to change often, be unpredictable, and a little chaotic. Good vocals are nice but instruments are much much more important.

"math rock", even though its name is a poor label, is probably my favorite style.

Lyrics are secondary to me. I like it contrapuntal.

I like softer songs/bands with clean female vocals, usually where the keyboard plays a big role. Like Gothic Metal, Symphonic Metal, Tegan and Sara, Versant, etc...

I also like fast/hard punk-influenced songs/bands. Usually with screamed vocals and breakdowns. Like Saetia, Circle Takes the Square, Rise Against, Hawthorne Heights, etc...

Then I like Electronic music of all kinds.

I like different things about different types of music

I like like funny lyrics~ like comedy music
Songs that I feel I can relate to~ like sad love songs or that emo/screamo stuff
Upbeat music~ like pop or Irish drinking songs
Songs with messages about social issues~ like feminist music or Christian rock songs that aren't about god
Angry music that I can understand~ like rock but I'm NOT into the really heavy stuff like black/death metal; it sounds like grunting & static to me
There's lots of other stuff to

I tend to like atmospherics and mood + lots of variety and loud/soft dynamics. I think this came into it's popular heyday in the 90s with bands like the Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead.

I hear you with the atmospherics. I'm very fascinated with the concept of space in music. The use of reverb and delays, stereo or surround panning, usually to create a large, cavernous sound-- basically using the studio as an instrument. Space is a commonly overlooked but very important aspect of how we perceive sound. I also like unusual timbres created with synthesizers or creative use of processing during mixing.

Audio.

Lol, I know how vague that is, but that's really all I need. I would've said "Melody", but I can listen to just percussion and rhythms and be happy with that. Would've said "Rhythm", but I enjoy relaxing melodious songs without rhythm.

It could have the sound of beaches or a storm, or other non-musical ambience, and in most cases like that I'll still like it.

But... getting back to the real world of music, I listen to everything, from the most heavenly ambient or classical pieces, to gritty screaming death metal. I listen to Gospel, I listen to Black Metal (reversed lyrical themes). I listen to every genre imaginable.

My obsession with "music" is certainly awkward. ;)

Same here. Heavy reverb and deep buzzy guitars give me an eargasm. I think sounds/timbres are the most evocative aspect of music for me.

I also like rhythms that have a sense of urgency/tension in them. I like syncopation. I like acid jazz.

I like a lot of music with tunes that at the same time is a bit ugly and strange. The first albums of Pink Floyd and The Mothers of Invention at least epitomise a lot of what I want to hear.

I like music that I can use as a soundtrack to my daydreams. Or sometimes I like finding songs that would fit quite well with stories I like writing on my computer, the lyrics are usually secondary, the sound is more important.

A refined but still edgy sound.
