Silverchair? That's a band you don't hear about too often these days. I was pretty impressed with Diorama (even though it's a bit rough around the edges). Daniel Johns really grew artistically and came into his own on that album.

He's kind of like Brian Wilson, the creative muscle behind the Beach Boys. He started out writing straight-ahead, mainstream pop for teenagers then his music gradually metamorphosed into avant garde 80-piece orchestral epics. You could say Diorama is Daniel Johns' "Pet Sounds."

The other two members of the group are like vestigial limbs Johns is reluctant to chop off. I think Johns should stop Doing Business as Silverchair to better hone his talents.

It's really interesting how they transformed over the years. Each album is a progression of a newer sound.

In fact, their last album was extremely progressive. They're delving into prog rock...strange for a band that started off as a bunch of 15 year old kids screaming about being freaks over a bunch of grunge rock.

The funny thing is, I grew up with Silverchair. I was a fan in high school, I borrowed and burned a copy of Neon Ballroom from my friend Erin, and I picked up the earlier two albums soon afterward. Now I own cd copies of all 5 albums.

I consider them a fantastic rock band, and I personally don't care if they changed their sound. They still rock.
