Until last summer, my favorite composer was John Williams because of Star Wars and Indiana Jones. But then I saw a little known independent sci-fi movie called Moon. The score was one of the most atmospheric I'd ever heard. A few days later, with the theme song for Moon in my head, I got on the old family piano which had gone unused in the garage for about 7 years. I began to play. Within a week, I could play the song, although crudely, by ear. I taught myself how to play piano from then on. That was 7 months ago. I later discovered The Fountain, Requiem For a Dream, Pi, Black Swan, an some other movies with his music. The thing I like about him is that he has no one style and never fails to capture the emotions onscreen in musical form. Here's some of his best music.

The last one is properly titled "Lux Aeterna" and is used in a few places

Yeah, it's a very popular song. My problem with it is that everyone uses it in their youtube videos to the point that outside of the context of the film, the song annoys me. Plus, they don't even use the original but rather the LOTR version which is dumb.

I am a big Clint Mansell fan, with my favorite piece being the first one you posted ("Death is the Road to Awe" from The Fountain)--it affects me emotionally more than things are usually able to. I love that whole soundtrack in particular (though I'm very fond of his other works as well), with another favorite being "First Snow." "Memories (Someone We'll Never Know)" from Moon is also very beautiful.

Yeah, "Death is the road to awe" is also my favorite. I also love Last Man, First Snow, and Together We Will Live Forever. They really affect me on an emotional level and I use them when I brainstorm story ideas.
