Is it when you can make a living from selling your art? Or is it just when you sell your art? Or is it something else?
I've been selling a lot my paintings lately, but I don't make much money from it, barelly enough to pay for the canvas.

When art is your profession.

(btw, art should not be thought of as a profession, art is for everyone)

I think a profession is something you make a living doing.

Good question.

I'm a musician. I've played over a dozen shows with my band, but we usually don't make any money, and it we do it's usually several dollars for each of us. But I consider it my job because writing, practicing, and recording take up much of my time.

I've got passion and dedication. I hope that makes me "professional", but I guess I just don't use that word. It's my job, but I still need another job. So I would say making a living equates to having a profession.

It's when you make a significant income from selling your art. It needn't be your whole income.

Though there is a school of thought which restricts the use of "profession" to those jobs which require a particular qualification, which is what nick is alluding to, a moment's thought will show that this very clearly cannot be applied to art; it would for instance imply that Elvis Presley, the best-selling (solo) popular musician of all time, was not a professional.
