What was the title of this book? pls help

When I was a tween, I had a book that made an impact on me at the time. Unfortunately I am unable to find it, so it must be lost. Its Norwegian title was "Kjære Jean... hilsen Maxine" (dear Jean... love Maxine), but I have no idea what its English title was.
I'm trying get hold of a copy of it, but I don't remember the name of the author, so it's impossible.

Can anyone tell me the title or author of this book?

It was about Maxine and Jean, two friends who got separated because Jean moved away. The entire book consisted of letters Maxine wrote to Jean.
Maxine's letters mentioned her missing Jean, her growing friendship with Imelda, Maxine taking an interest in Imelda's Catholic faith, and her French pen-pal Jean who was coming to England, and finally her taking an interest in Imelda's brother (Frank? Frankie?).

Does this ring a bell for anyone? If you know either the title or the author, please let me know!
