I'd really like to get into comics - it'd make sense to get into X-men comics as I have a serious obsession with Nightcrawler ♥
As a note I recognise many comic genre films, X-men especially, are blasphemous.
I've had an interest for a while and know some history, but when it comes to the comics themselves I'd not know where to start - X-men in particular has so much history! It's not just about the stories, characters and spin-offs, but knowing about comics themselves such as knowing artists, significance of certain comics, etc. as well as the issue of catching-up and not having experienced comics ever before, it all means it's a big interest to suddenly jump into.
I've been in comic stores before (locally we have Travelling Man and Forbidden Planet ) but I've never bought a comic and I'd be embarrassed to ask for help from a member of staff...because I am so totally clueless, and being on a budget probably wouldn't help matters.

I love nightcrawlet as well.
If you want to get into x men next week begins x men schism so that will be a good jumping on point. X men us doing really great stuff right now so enjoy. Marvel is good because they have a recap page so it gives you a basic understanding of what is going on.
In dc comics the whole company is rebooting in September so that will be a good jumping on point.
If you ever get confused about a character wikipedia is great.
If you are planning on getting into comics find a local comic store. They should help alot and see what kind of discounts they give if you buy books regularly there. They will get you an account and usually give you 10-20% off per the books you subscribe to.
A great website is ifanboy.com. They have a weekly list of comics coming out that weekand good articles.
Feel free to message me with questions about characters and comics in general.
Comics are so diverse now, there is comics journalism a-la Joe Sacco, classic 'alt' like the stuff from the Fantagraphics stable [I recommend Peter Bagge and los hermanos Hernandez - particularly Jaimes 'locas' storylines], Classic European noir....
I suggest finding your local comic store and browsing the shelves, as for becoming a 'comic geek' you need testicles an odd haircut, achne and a weight problem, then hang around the comic shop counter arguing continuity details or cross company hero clashes that won't ever happen and be awkward with girls unless they are also 'comic geeks' in which case they are only ever friends because 'I don't see you that way' [this is humour not flaming - please
]
love a comic semi nerd.

Have a great day!
Recommendation: Get into OLD comics. I believe that Nightcrawler is currently dead in Marvel continuity. (Note that since he's an X-Man, that status may be subject to change without notice...)
Besides, I can't really say I care for what they've done to the X-Franchise since M-Day, with the exception of X-Factor (due in large part to the writing style of the inimitable Peter David). Seems like all the remaining mutants in the world, with the exception of X-Factor Investigations, have relocated to Utopia Island, where they are threatened with total annihilation an average of once per week. (You'd think it might have occurred to Cyclops or Xavier or somebody that locating every extant mutant in a few square miles of territory, physically separated from other land but still on Earth, might not have been the best idea ever, considering the number of groups who've announced over the years that they intend to obliterate all mutants - not to mention old grudges between, say, the old-school X-Men and the remains of the Brotherhood...)
