I don't really like it, though I'd be pleased with myself for making such a racket. Anything Alec Empire-y annoys me most of the time.

I guess I'm too much of a philistine to enjoy that particular track.

Some of her other stuff is okay.

I quite like 'noisy' moments as part of an arrangement, but I must have some requirement for a rhythm and melody to hold onto (I like the second vid linked in this thread, but couldn't sit through the entirety of the first one). My favourite bands - Mogwai, 65DaysOfStatic, Mono for instance - are generally melodic, but punctuate their songs with moments of FX pedal shrieking, which is really effective.

If you asked for 'mental, ridiculous music' I'd simply point you in the direction of Melt-Banana. A good 'gateway' song of theirs might be a cover version like this one:

The sense of familiarity there should give a general idea of what they normally sound like!

Old school industrial is pretty noisy and mentally deranged but still tolerable to my ears.

These are not my favorites but sometimes I listen to things like "Imminent Starvation" or "Geistform". These can give me some "energy" and clean up my mind. I don't like the "destructiveness" appearing in many industrial music.

The problem with industrial music is it's just too in-your-face abrasive and distracted to listen to while doing anything else. It doesn't let your mind wander. It's only use is really catharsis or perhaps a sense of thrill that comes with emotional identification. It's a controlled subjection to a harshness that would normally be considered intolerable, mixed with a strong sense of emotional identification. Industrial conveys the most primitive, undeveloped, experience of the world, the experience when you first leave the womb and scream your first breath as the cold air hits you. If I want an NT to understand what trying to function in a noisy chaotic environment makes me feel like, I can point to industrial music. I don't see it as destructive really though.

Why does all music need to be listenable when your not completly focused? I think it's silly to criticize forms of art for being too abrasive and confrontal when that may have been artists intent in the first place. I'm not a big fan of industrial, but I do like allot of confrontal/abrasive music, and don't understand the criticism.

Allot of the most moving paintings are usually the most eye catching and disturbing in my opinion. I don't know why people think it's bad for music to confront or disturb.

I totally agree with RushKing: you can't expect to get 100% out of all music if you're only half-listening to it.

This is one of my favourite bands during their brief experimental phase - the first song builds up from a melodic start; the second is stupidly noisy from 20 seconds in.:-)
