Some of the synthy stuff in here reminds me vaguely of Wendy Carlos. The vocal stuff reminds me of the simplicity of Kraftwerk. Ralph's singing has that sort of quiet quality that is kind of half-spoken, half-sung. Hard to explain. It's like he's talking, it just happens to be in rhythm and on pitch.

Just for my personal taste, I could do without the 808 sounds. What stands out to me is this so much more artsy than what we tend to think of as mainstream electronic music. It reminds me of the kinds of things some of my college classmates would do for their composition projects.

I'm wondering, how did you record the vocals? It seems to me maybe the sound quality could be better, but if you're using a built-in computer mic or something plugged into a sound card, that's going to be hard to do. You can mangle the voice line a bit with FX to compensate, i.e. make it worse but at the same time make it fit in with everything else as a musical effect. One of my favorite tricks is use a resonant filter to get a crackly low-fi sound. You could also use something like ring modulation. You can also manipulate a waveshaper into imitating an overdriven 8-bit circuit or use a bitcrusher effect. I'm not saying you HAVE to use those kinds of things. But something I do if I'm just being lazy and know I'm just going to apply a lot of FX anyway is I'll use a cheaper mic or an internal mic for recording and take advantage of the lo-fi quality.

Edit: I'm also hearing some strong Laurie Anderson influence here. Overall, good stuff!

Will have to look up Laurie Anderson and Wendy Carlos! I love Kraftwerk tho. :)

The production quality leaves a little to be desired.

At first, the lyrics felt too simplistic, but once I heard how you overlaid them, what an awesome effect. Nicely constructed!

Some parts reminded me a little bit of some really old Pink Floyd. A lot more synthed than their work though.

What software(s) did you use for this?

I used Sony ACID. Yeah, I need a better microphone. I'm gonna buy a YETI in May after my trip to Canada. :)

You need one of these:
Shure SM57 with XLR-to-USB

Cheap mic, but extremely durable. Nice, contoured frequency response. You can record everything with this mic.

I do like it, but I'd prefer an instrumental version a lot more. It doesn't need lyrics, the music can take you to another place without them.

Interesting.

Who is doing the vocals? Are you doing the vocals? I'm just curious because your avatar is a girl but that doesn't actually mean you are a girl. The voice reminds me of a little of Conor Oberst, one of my favorite singers.

To give an objective critique, I think there is potential here, but could maybe use a little more depth of emotion and lyrics. The lyrics just seem a little forced to me. However, it has a pleasant sound it, so I think you are on the right track.

Hey I actually like this... This is awesome! And with work on the vocals, it could be outstanding! This reminds me of a band called Yo La Tengo... Vocals and all. I love this band and you remind me of them.

I'd go with an SM58 if all you need it for is vocals. It's basically the same price and specifically designed for vocals. The SM57 is more for instruments, and can be used for vocals, but can be a bit tricky to record with if you don't have much experience modulating your breathing and don't use a pop screen.

Hmm. When it first started playing, The Postal Service came to mind. The music is nice and calming, I like it. I don't like the vocals though. It isn't just the bad quality of the microphone but rather that you sound very out-of-tune and out-of-sync with the music.

I'm sorry! I don't want to sound harsh or anything. :\ I want it to be clear that I do think the music is good. I'm just not a fan of the vocals.

Good effort, I think your music sounds like a Pet Shop Boys 'B' side.
A mixture of Laurie Anderson "Oh Superman" meets Evelyn Glennie.
