Any body else get annoyed when asked to describe band/music tastes? I get somewhat irritated when asked what I listen to or the bands. Goes something like this.
NT: What kind of music do you listen to?
Me: Metal mostly...
NT: Oh yeah I noticed your tatoos - like what bands do you listen to?
Me: Bands like Enslaved, Dream Theater, Fear Factory, etc (Blank expresssion on their face, nodding head) there so many different types of bands I listen to...
NT: Oh ok... I like Linkin Park, I used to listen to a song of Slipknot but then I heard they were Satanists.
Me: *Raises eyebrows briefly, small nod of head* *Mental Facepalm*
I don't know why but this annoys me. If you see a small tattoo on my throat symbolising my favourite band - I think its safe to assume we will not have anything in common musically.

I usually get the same, but notice it is more of a desperation tactic when somebody feels obligated to talk to me but doesn't really want to.

Responses such as "eh" generally don't fare well with others, however it's as you indicated as difficult to respond when you know for certain this person has no idea about the band (or even sometimes genre) to which you may be referring.

Yes. Most people I know listen to very mainstream bands/artists, which some are good but I believe in exploring more unknown artists and such.
I hate when people tell me they love Adele. Yes she's good but do they really appreciate musical ability or are they listening to her because she's "popular"?

I like more under-rated artists.

Yes, but because I don't know how to answer. I like a lot of different things and always have phases where I listen to one genre, one era, one album, one artist/group,..etc. So I wouldn't know how to answer sincerely and just say I listen to different things but that's not really conversational so I ask back.

Yes. Even when I wanted to do my top 10 albums list, I flinched and said to myself 'there goes'. Because I know I don't necessarily put much thought into what I think makes music 'good' or the 'best', I'm sure some of what I chose was crap, but they were all albums I'd clung to. In theory, I WOULD want a wider perspective on the subject, but I tend to feel like a teenie whose favourite music is considered to be good by more 'niche' people. It took me time to realise that just because I like things which trend in some music-loving circles does not mean everyone will 'get' my obsessions, in fact people tend to be either TOO alternative or too not-adventurous musically for my liking, it's hard for me to find someone like me.

I wouldn't even know where to begin to describe what I like. Apart from anything else I don't understand genres and labels and suchlike.

I havent been asked this question in a long time. But in the past two years or so, I've been exploring unknown artists and less popular genres. I've particularly liked exploring "World Music." Pandora, AOL radio and the like are great for this. So I wouldnt know how to answer the question. Because I dont want to say the cliched "everything" as most people will say. But if you mention what you actually listen to they wont have a clue anyway. Some pop music is good too, but I dont really seek it out, just happen to catch it on the radio. And the really good pop stuff is usually so overplayed I stop listening to it entirely.

I say I listen to metal, and then they say they dislike it becuase it's just screaming or ask if I listen to some metalcore or nu-metal band I dislike.

I get annoyed when I tell people that I listen to The British Invasion. They automatically think its the name of a rock n roll band. I have to tell those people a list of bands from that era that I listen to and after I tell them, they ask me if I like other music like Rebecca Black or Justin Bieber. This may be the 21st Century, but I'd rather be true to myself than pretend to be somebody else and pretend to like music that I don't like.

I can't stand it. I just say, "All sorts of stuff." Including classical, jazz, classic rock, '60s pop, blues, progressive metal, and whatever else I find interesting that day.

I hate talking about the music I listen to, because I know that it's considered crappy by most people. My favorite genres of music are eurodance and bubblegum dance, which are closely related and include songs like "Every Time We Touch" by Cascada and "Barbie Girl" by Aqua (for two mainstream examples). The people who even know what euro/bubblegum dance are, usually consider the songs to be for weeaboos or little kids (if youtube comments are anything to go by).

Since a lot of mainstream music from artists like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Pitbull and David Guetta, is heavily influenced by eurodance (whether intentionally or not), I like to listen to them. But I'm so scared to tell people that I enjoy that kind of music because I'm afraid that they'll look down on me like some kind of musical philistine for enjoying mainstream/recent music instead of "the classics". I've tried to make myself like stuff that's "cool" to listen to, but it doesn't make me happy like heavily electronic-sounding/autotuned music does.

Everyone likes what they like - don't worry about what other people think. One of my better friends from years past loved j-pop and even got me to like some of it, which is bizarre because I usually hate that sort of thing. I don't understand judging people by the music they listen to any more than by the books they read. It's a quirk, and quirks are what make people interesting.

Today I was like "I listen to girly Japanese pop..." when someone asked what I listened to. I used to just keep it vaguer and be like "uh...mostly techno...yeah." I used to get more annoyed, but then I just stopped caring as much.

Yes, because I don't exactly know what my tastes are in the first place apart from, er, unpopular.

If someone has to ask what my music tastes are, they are generally quite stunned.

My shirt has the logo of a metal band on it. My jeans are black. I am wearing work boots. Chances are my headphones are currently playing a song in to my ears.

It should be pretty obvious that I am a metalhead.

Music is my obsession and it's very personal to me.
When I was a kid I obsessively discussed my interests and it made people angry and everyone thought that I was selfish.
I have now learned to never share anything personal with other people.

Most Americans have never heard of the bands that I listen to so It is annoying to explain what my music sounds like to others.
I tell people that I like almost every genre of music. I attempt to be social and polite but never truthfully answer their question.

I only share my musical obsession with my very close family members. They become tired of the obsessive ranting and ignore me.
