Hi, i'm new here. My special interest is harmonicas, collecting them and enjoying them, but I can't ever play them because the other people in my house hate them, and it's very frustrating to have a musical instrument as a special interest if one can't ever play it.! !! So I had to develop other things as a substitute for that particular passion I had. (not as satisfying though) Anyone else live in a house where their musical leanings are severely discouraged? What did you do about it? I need to find a nice CAVE to play in.

At least it's not bagpipes. :P

But seriously, that really does suck. I used to be very musical, but it was only ever encouraged in my house. Have you tried playing outside, or is that discouraged as well?

I like harmonicas, in the right hands that is ;). Junior wells is probably my favorite harmonica player, he could do some pretty amazing things with such a simple instrument. And I think that the idea of practicing in a park is really good, if you aren't too embarrassed that is.

So do I! But it's pretty impossible to practice anywhere with those things, especially if your family doesn't absolutely adore them. :P

Practicing in a park sounds great, but I can see that you might not be comfortable.

I love playing it. I'm not trained, so I just make sounds for fun, but still.

Why can't they appreciate your talent and be proud of it? they basically repress you by doing that. Ask them like if you can for some time a day play at home, and if you want more, go outside or at a friend's house and play.

Oh, if you have like a conservatory or a music school go there and play no way anyone there gona tell you not to.

hiya :)
what do you think of toots thielemans? he did the haunting melody from the theme to the movie "midnight cowboy." or charlie musselwhite? he can "blow the blues away" like nobody's business! i especially like the contrabass harmonicas [like the one you hear in quincy jone's intro theme to "sanford and son"]. i like contrabass anything, as a matter of fact. welcome to our neat little wrong planet club of harmonica appreciators :)
