I always found the divide between artistis strange...I think people like Rothko show the pretentious and Dali the sensitive.
That being said art is a beautiful and therapeutic tool...so I find it odd there are those who just like to show off their skills constantly to feel above others.
What category do you fit under? I am influenced by a wide range of art and have abandonment issues so I'd think I'm sensitive and insecure.

art is a human propulsion
and the realm of aesthetics
a boundless pool of imagination
a challenge exists in it
and who knows how high
the ceiling is
but the artist.

I have always felt that an artist is like a camera lens. They see the world and take snapshots and what develops is a rendition of the world we all share, but do not experience, the same way. What an artist does once their film is developed it is up to them in terms of personal character. Are there p[pretentious and uppity artists? Yes, like there are high and mighty doctors, bus drivers and short order cooks. I do not think that it is a matter of artistic pride in excess as much as an individual characteristic of an individual that happens to be an artist.
I think that line is very . . .narrow and slightly illogical. Art and personality are a spectrum as varied as butterflies.

When I say pretentious I mean people that give symbolism to seemingly random things and use very little technique in their style. Steohen Colbert recently had somebody on like that and his symbolism was so full of BS and his talent nearly non-existant I wanted to punch him through the Tv...yet his art sells for millions now.
I think the sensitive artist is best because he keeps the symbolism to himself and only shows it as a point of reference generally. I was never and never shall show off all my art because most people wouldn't be able to appreciate the time that goes into it...might sound arrogant but non-artists underestimate the time my high level of detail takes.

At least when I make something I do not tell anyone what it MEANS. Meaning is not as relevant in art as what it allows the observer to explore. A rose can mean a million things to a million people.

My artwork has private metaphors and symbolism for myself but overall art does not have to have emaning it can be just pleasant to listen to....but the pretentous artists don't see that.
Creativity is a beautiful thing...however, I think everyone should have a set of standards for what constitutes art as "good"...for themselves. As long as the artwork isn't completely talentless I can respect it, much like music (although overly technical stuff I have to crticize for it seeming pretentious.)
Balance is key in art. It is even part of the guidelines.
