Has anyone else read this book?

I thought the premise was good, but it looked like it could have been written by Mr. Garrison (from South Park).

Not really. Sorry to sound objective, but the book just makes me, well...... gag.

(This dramatic reading, like the book, is very NSFW/children.)

Never apologise for being 'objective'!

I would never read it (it's basically porn for women), but there's an absolutely hilarious clip on youtube of Gilbert Gottfried reading excerpts from it. Funniest thing I've seen in a while lol.

Well, since I'm I prefer not giving an opinion of something which I haven't experienced, or in this case read. I did actually go and buy a copy. I wanted to see what the fuss was about...

I was sorely disappointed. If people are impressed by this, then clearly they've been reading the wrong books or perhaps this is the first one they've read. It's not that I'm adverse to reading about BDSM or graphic sex scenes or anything like that. I'm open minded to reading about lots of different things. But the plot and the characters are lacking. I felt no real interest, attachment or connection to any of them. There wasn't even an urge or thirst to finish the book. It was intensely unsatisfying and dull. Sort of like opening a Christmas present only to find a lump of coal.

I wasn't expecting literature or some profound work that would change my life. Just simple entertainment. It failed at even that...perhaps it would serve better as kindling or a paper weight. I found the Twilight series more interesting that this rubbish. At least you find yourself invested in what happens to Bella and Edward, despite whatever you think it says about feminism. But with Mr Grey and whoever (it was so bad I've forgotten the main characters) nothing...nothing!

The only thing the novel did for me was further prove my suspicions. That a best seller has nothing to do with the quality of a book or a writer's talent, but with advertising and PR.

So my advice...if you really must read it, borrow or steal a copy and save yourself the waste of money.

From what I've heard it doesn't even portray the BDSM community accurately.

I have never understood how a Twilight fanfic with the names changed reached the level of popularity that it has. Certainly wasn't based on any actual writing ability.

Funny thing is, they are turning it into a movie, which you know is going to toned down to a PG-13 rating for more money, removing even the 'porn for women' aspect. Maybe once all the sex is taken out, people will finally realize that the story has zero redeeming value.

The only few excerpts I've read/heard so far made me sob with hysterical laughter. I'm not generally against erotic literature, but how anyone can get turned on by that I will never understand.

The sane reaction to the book.

@eelektrik - Have you heard that Brett Easton Ellis is writing the screen adaptation? It'd truly be a miracle if he manages to turn it into something half decent. But I agree there isn't much "story" left if they reduce it all to fit anything less than an R rating.

I haven't brought myself to read it, but I've heard that from a literary standpoint the series is horrendous. I did get into the Black Dagger Brotherhood series though, so maybe I'll give it a go one of these days.

I love it!

I kid. I got ahold of a free download from when the names were still 'Edward' and 'Bella'. It's nothing special. Do people who treat 50 Shades like a discovery realise people have been writing better fanfiction for years now?!

That's the only silver lining I see, I'm a huge fan.
