So recently someone posted Spasticus Autisticus

so that got me thinking, what other notable songs are there about disability? There is of course Dream Theater's epic The Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence: , but that's it's own thing.

Now, if you've been following the Brony community you would probably remember the "Derpy Incident" where a character was altered for being deemed offensive to the disabled. Naturally when that happened a wave of songs about said character came out that seemed to follow similar cliches between them and came across as a bunch of anti-cure rhetoric. Here is one of the best ones:

Now this is NOT one of those songs. It might have came out at around the same time and centers on the same character as the other songs, but if you pay attention it obviously isn't about the fiasco and it's a lot different from the other songs. I'm not going to spoil the details of the song, but it's probably my favorite Progressive Rock song, and it explores disability from different side than usual.

If you know anyother good songs about disability feel free to post them.

Fine song, but how is it about disability?

I don't know how to put videos on here but there was a song in 1981 called "They won't let my Girlfriend Talk to me" by Jimmy and the Boys.
It's about a man whose girlfriend is put in a Mental hospital.

I'm looking only for songs that are intentionally about disability.

"Measuring Cups" - by Andrew Bird

Quote:
Get out your measuring cups and we'll play a new game
Come to the front of the class and we'll measure your brain
We'll give you a complex and we'll give it a name

Get out your measuring cups and we'll play a new game
Can't have the cream when the crop and the cream are the same
Liquid or gas no more than the glass will contain

When you talk about the hand of glory
A tale that's rather grim and gory
Is it just another children's story that's been de-clawed?
When the tales of brothers Grimm and Gorey have been outlawed

I think they're gonna make you start over
You don't want to start over
Put your backpack on your shoulder
Be the good little soldier
Take your places now
'Cause we're all predisposed

Measuring cups, play a new game
Front of the class, measure your brain
Give you a complex and we'll give it a name

When you talk about the hand of glory
A tale that's rather grim and gory
Is it just another children's story that's been de-clawed?
When the tales of brothers Grimm and Gorey have been outlawed

Put your backpack on your shoulder
Be the good little soldier
It's no different when you're older
You're predisposed
That's all for questions now
The case is closed!

It seems to be about the stigma of mental/cognitive disabilities resenting being labeled and treated in a patronizing way. While not autistic, the writer says he was told he had a learning disability and was held back a year in school. It's also about the way public education and society in general focuses too much on "measuring up to the norm" and conformity rather than accepting individual differences, strengths and weaknesses.

This song suggests that there may be environmental toxins that cannot be avoided (It's in your water, and in your food. It's all around you: the air you breathe) that make everybody crazy.

The way it pertains to disability is this. I wrote it, and one of the parts goes My peace and quiet. It's what I need. That is because of the sensory issues from my autism. When I wrote this song about twenty years ago, I did not at that time know I had Aspergers. Just about that time is when the DSM-IV came out that finally recognized it in the USA, but yeah, it is a deeply personal song. I was questioning why I am different, and why all humans seem to act crazy, and pleading for peace and quiet.

It's nice to see a song from the community. So basically are you saying with this song that everyone is crazy, so you aren't really crazy, it's just relative?

Thanks. What constitutes sanity in any society is a majority consensus, so if the majority is crazy then crazy is normal. The premise of my song is there may be environmental toxins affecting everybody that mess with our minds, which seems likely to me and also explains some peculiarities of human behavior if true.

I always thought this song fit those with psychosis/Schizophrenia/bipolar disorder. I guess it could fit people with a disability.

I was originally going to post this song, but you beat me to it. I identify with it so much that it makes me cry sometimes.

Another song, that's not really supposed to be for someone with a disability... but it does fit, especially those with Autism is Me Against the World by Simple Plan.

I relate to this song so much because I feel like because I am different from everyone else, far from being normal that I'm against the world. You'd have to listen to the song to really understand it.
