The industrial - darkwave - goth thread
Didn't see a thread like this, so I thought I create one and see who else like their industrial/darkwave/goth genre. This isn't a heavy metal or hard rock thread. In case you were wondering.

There is a scene in the novella "Wetland" that takes place in a goth club The Baltic Room. If it was made into a film, I could definitely see the music of Diary of Dreams playing through its speakers. In the basement of the club where there is a Theatre of Pain, the music would have to be more brutal, something closer to death metal.

I enjoy the Razormaid remixes. But I was waiting for someone else to post some Depeche Mode to compare the differences.

And the people who started it all??
I have always loved the mixed origins of this music.
It can be punk, rock, pop, and electronic dance music.
But in the beginning there was straight up hard Guitar.
(1979) Joy Division ー Transmission (released a year before Ian Curtis tragic death, after which they became New Order)

(1979) Bauhaus ー Bela Lugosi's Dead (became theme song for Tony Scott's 1982 "The Hunger" starring David Bowie)

(1980) Bauhaus ー In The Flat Field

(1984) Skinny Puppy ー K9 (these Canadians added more digital synthesizers and samplers to the music for better effect)

(1985) Skinny Puppy ー Assimilate

(1987) Sisters Of Mercy ー Lucretia My Reflection (by the time Andrew Eldritch released this, the music had become mainstream)

*facepalm* how could I forget Joy Division, Bauhaus, Skinny Puppy and Sisters of Mercy. I've never been good with names.
Thanks MannyBoo, I've liked your music selection in the hiphop thread too. Although most purists wouldn't be caught dead sharing interest in both. Hope to see more posts from you in the future.

Hello Stalk, nice to meet you. I guess I am just a typical Aspie who is obsessed with dates and names.
You are welcome. Yes I have definitely liked Hip Hop for decades, and yes, I have also liked Rock, Pop, Soul, Disco, Salsa, Jazz, Funk, R&B, House, Techno, Industrial, Trance, etc.., even "Goth" or "Alternative" music for decades.. I have liked it all, and played it all.. It is interesting to see connections between supposedly different kinds of music.. For example, the connection between so called "Goth", and other genres like Disco.. Or the connection between Techno and Hip Hop..etc..
I noticed you like Dead Or Alive?
Disco Thread:
There is a connection between bands like Joy Division and Disco music.. Even Skinny Puppy of Vancouver, Canada, was influenced by electronic dance music, and used heavy digital synthesizers (such Yamaha SY series), samplers and drum machines.. There was even a connection between "Goth" and Hip Hop.. To be honest I have never liked the term "Goth" because it is mostly a media/record company's commercialization.. I just use the name of the band itself, and ignore whatever "genre" it has been is labeled as.
"Genre Names" are made by Journalists, to make it easier to write a news report, and promoted by Music Companies, to make it easier to sell records, and then the Public buys into it.. But the Artists themselves usually do not care about definitions, because they are Artists who just want to do their Art in freedom.. Definitions are just for convenience and knowledge control, to make music easy to talk about.. But "genre" is not always accurate. Of course I use "genre labels" to talk about music, and that is OK, but I do not always take it too seriously.. So I am not a "purist", but I am a "hybridist", interested in the connection of cultures. I think just "Let's enjoy music!"
And yes, I definitely like THE CURE too.. I tried to make my hair like Robert Smith when I was a junior high school student, but I put Toothpaste in my hair to get a matted effect, because Gel and Mousse did not work well. He was my "hero" at that time, so I dressed all black too.. my memory is embarrassing.

(1985) THE CURE ー Close To Me

(1987) THE CURE ー Just Like Heaven

I didn't post any Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy or Joy Divison because I figured they were some of the obvious and well known ones.
I noticed all the Cure videos...anyone heard Adele's cover of Lovesong? Adele is a wonderful artist, but her version of that song is not pretty.

I think you might like Dead Or Alive's music in the early 1980's. Before 1985 they had a darker sound and were still relatively underground. I do not personally include them as "Goth" myself, because for me that term only became popular through the media/commercialization in the 1990's, after the music had already become mainstream in the late 1980s.
Here is my favorite pre-SAW Dead Or Alive track, "Misty Circles", which had an extended 12 inch single version on Epic Records. It sounds darker and moodier than "You Spin Me Round", but it is also clearly an electronic dance song meant for Disco/Dance clubs. So people can be dark, gloomy, and dance at the same time. Pete Burns is a genius
