Help an awesome (but struggling!) Aspie musician-poet!
Hi there, Collective Aspie Anonymous!
My boyfriend is an Aspie whose obsession is music, & he's really good at it (yeah, I know girlfriends are biased, but his musical skill was what first drew me to him). He composes his own songs, writes his own lyrics, & then somehow manages to get the rest of his band (who are all NTs) to go along with it.
He's also an active poet (his Master's degree was in poetry & critical theory), which you can pretty clearly see from his lyrics (& how he likes to format them!)—cf. link to lyrical broadsides.
His music is wonderful—very intelligent, clever lyrics, & with catchy hooks to boot—& some of his latest lyrics might really speak to fellow Aspies ("some connections can only run one way/the reflection of an unfinished world" & "the subtlest smile sometimes hides the tooth of crime" & "the most familiar stranger/that I've ever met" are all lines that comes to mind). It's weird, unconventional, literate, artistic, indie rock. ...sort of. (I feel like I can't quite describe it in words without doing it some manner of injustice. You really just have to listen to it in order to tell if it's something you would like.)
Unfortunately, because he's an Aspie, he really kinda sucks at promoting his music. And he really sucks at leveraging social networks to help introduce more people to said music. (It doesn't help that a lot of folks seem to think he's a jerk because he tends to dominate conversations & doesn't care about other folks' opinions...but mostly, he's just an Aspie who's incredibly passionate & opinionated about music.) So he's pretty much completely obscure, in spite of his talent. So, I was hoping maybe a few fellow Aspies would be open enough to check his stuff out & [perhaps! even] enjoy his music. (It'd be so, so, so cool if we could pull some weight as a community to help support the endeavours of our own.)
So, yeah. Anyway...
His band's name is the Minor Arcana, & his website is www.minor-arcana.com. (You can check out a bunch of his older songs, including those from his first record, on the old version of the official website [in the widget, in the bottom righthand corner of the site]) He's also got a page on ReverbNation & on Facebook. He's currently trying to fund the other half of his second record, Days Between Stations, on PledgeMusic. (He's already posted a bunch of demos of his new songs for this record in the Updates section of the PledgeMusic campaign site.)
There're only 8 days left [as of this posting] to the PledgeMusic campaign (& he's only at 58% funded :( ), so, pretty please—if you check out his music (& you enjoy it!), please consider either donating (even if you can only afford a few dollars!, that's still super-helpful!), or at least share the link with others—or even just get in touch with him to let him know you appreciate what he's doing. (I don't think he'll ever admit it, but I think having a stranger or two enjoy his music would be quite meaningful for him.)
Kindest regards,
Kate,
