Graduating class songs
Late May and early June is graduation time where I live (United States). Each year the local newspaper where I'm from publishes a special section featuring each local school - the names of each of its graduates as well as the valedictorian(s), the class colors and so on. One of my favorite items to look at is the class song of each school, since it's come a long way from the few stereotypical if good ones like "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" and "Graduation". When I graduated in 2011 I remember when they announced the winner of the class song - "Don't Stop Believin'" - there were audible cheers throughout the classrooms, as the choices were that, a Nickelback song ("If Today was Your Last Day") and a song that was good but that only a few students knew, Eve6's "Here's to the Night". Besides my own class song some of my favorites I saw listed in the newspaper section were:
"Don't Forget to Remember Me"- Carrie Underwood
"Whenever You Remember" - Carrie Underwood
"Tattoos on This Town" - Jason Aldean
"My Wish" - Rascal Flatts
"Don't Blink" - Kenny Chesney (we live in a rural area if you didn't guess)
"Forever Young" in its various incarnations - Alphaville, Jay-Z and the completely different Rod Stewart song
"How Far We've Come" - Matchbox 20
"Here's to the Night" - Eve6
"Come Together" - The Beatles
"Never Say Goodbye" - Bon Jovi (also played for the Senior Circle at my senior Homecoming)
"Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" - Green Day
"Go the Distance" - Michael Bolton (fom Disney's Hercules).
Some songs I think would make good grad songs but that I haven't seen used are:
"Move Along" - The All-American Rejects
"Livin' on a Prayer" - Bon Jovi
"Little Wonders" - Rob Thomas (from Disney's Meet the Robinsons)
"The Great Escape" - Boys Like Girls
"The Night Before (Life Goes On)" - Carrie Underwood
And a few more I can't remember right now.
What's everyone else's favorite class song they've heard of being used? What was your class song, if you had one (I know it's a fairly new practice)? Did you like it, and where/when was it played, if at all (mine was only used at Homecoming and Prom for the Senior Circles, and the title and artist were printed in the programs for commencement)? What do you wish your class song had been and what else do you think would make good class songs?
