I am doing research so I can have a manuscript published about the last four campaigns of the American Civil War in Virginia, and I need to know how I get permission from the publishers and the authors, if they're still living, or their estate, if the authors are no longer living.

If this is just a matter of using material by previous authors, you only need to make citations of your source materials and quotes.
