Anyone else here into 3D modeling, at all? I find it to be just a natural extension of my interest in games and game design, as well as my interest in filmmaking, to an extent.

I'm learning to use Blender, and I've been teaching myself to do so for about a month or so, now. My interest in its uses and capabilities keeps shifting, too. Sometimes I'm interested in modeling and animating for 3D animation, sometimes for 3D games, and others for 2D/2.5D isometric games and other things. Right now, I'm trying to force myself to concentrate on modeling and animating a mid-to-high-poly SSig Sauer P226 that I could use for either a 3D animation or a moderately-powerful 3D game engine.

And, of course, as is ypical of a beginning 3D modeler, my topology is terrible. It starts out relatively clean, simple, and organized, and then it all goes downhill from there. The model looks fine on the surface, the wireframe's always a huge mess. It's not quite so bad that modeling turns into a giant cluster-fuck, but it's certainly not uniform or good-looking, like more experienced and skilled modelers usually are. I think I've started over on the P226 probably about 5 to 10 times, now, always scrapping it because of the terrible mesh topology I end up creating while trying to adjust everything to make the model match the reference image(s) I'm using.

Also, if anyone else here who's also into 3D modeling and animation has any workflow and organization tips for creating functional models (not just single-solid static props) I'm all ears. I'm getting really fed up with my consistently crappy topology and subsequently poor organization.

Years ago I tried to get into Houdini, 3DS Max, Rhino, Bryce and a few others. I had the most success with Max but I eventually abandoned it. Damn jobs! They always get in the way!

If I have the time I'd like to get back into Max because I have a design for a perpetual motion machine and I could use Max or some other CAD 3D program to realize it.
