Hey,

I am wondering if there is any interest to form an online writing/critique group consisting of members from this community. It would be private to the degree that what you share of your creative talent will only be visible to other people in the group, unless you choose otherwise. The aim will be constructive criticism and appreciation so we can all improve our skill.

It does not matter it your genre is fantasy, horror, literary fiction, poetry or biographies - all styles are welcome.

Anyone up for it?

I might be interested in this. I suppose we'll be working on the honors system to give at least as much as we receive.

I would be interested, though I have not done any creative writing I think it would be nice for me to try.

This sounds like a great idea. However, before anyone gets involved I would suggest taking a look at some existing forums where creative writing is submitted and criticized. Writers are harsh critics.

Critique is what helps people really think about what they're writing, how, and why, though. Some communities have looser guidelines about being constructive than others, but if someone doesn't respect it enough to treat it as a skill to be developed then it's unlikely they'll become good.

That's assuming it's good critique, though, which not all of it is.

I agree but I think before anyone embarks on this they should be aware that they may not get to hear what they want to if submitting their work for review.

Thank you for all the interest :)

I am currently working on the website for this project. It should be ready in a couple of days, so please keep an eye on this thread to stay updated :)

I'm interested. :)

I mainly write poetry, but I read a lot and can critique other writing.

I could possibly be interested. But I am such a private person...so I will give it some thought. I have works that have been published. But I am not big on certain kinds of negative feedback---and I do stress "certain kinds." Sometimes those certain kinds can come across in a degrading way. So we would have to be very careful in how we would handle this as I feel many of us probably don't thrive on negative feedback. I have a headache tonight, so I'm not thinking the clearest, but yes, I might be interested.

Back in my college days, when I had taken creative writing work shops, there were some classes where fellow classmates - and the instructors - could be so purposely hurtful that I had stopped turning in stories for the class to read, and almost gave up writing all together.

I will write a guide for critiquing that will be available for everyone to read. In addition, I will moderate the group appropriately.

The purpose of this group will be to build each other up in an area that is often considered reserved for the neurotypical. If the opposite happens, the group should not exist.

So please, do not worry. We will create a positive experience together.

Another thing to remember is that opinion on writing is subjective. What one person finds negative another my find positive. Aside from obvious things like grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
