"Autism from the inside view" by WhirlingMind

When you see life through your own set of glasses
When your soul exists worlds apart
Your senses too keen, fragile and shattered
Confusion, is merely the start

The world assaults you from all sides
Why are others not also the same
Why are you different, why do you not fit
Why is it you, that others blame

You feel like a snail needing it's shell
You feel like everything's wrong
People don't make sense to you
So you sing the saddest song

Your anger may rise, your fear overwhelm
Your tears fall unrecognised
Where is the world that for you would be home
Where is that place, that yourself would be prized

Hiding away becomes easy, when understanding is none
Encounters with others a trial
Your words feel like those from a foreign shore
And you feel from others such bile

You want order and control in this world of chaos
You want others to accept and be aware
But we are the minority in this place
And the majority don't seem to care

(I am interested to know if this is how it feels for anyone else?)

i do not feel the way you portray in your poem. i do not really understand the deeper meaning of it anyway.

whirlingmind wrote:

my glasses are adequate for me to see what i wish to see. i have excellent long field vision, but i can not see clearly anything that is closer to me an my outstretched arm, and my glasses are adequate to resolve my near field vision anomalies.

whirlingmind wrote:

does that relate to seeing things with my glasses on? if so, i can not fathom how. worlds apart from what?

whirlingmind wrote:

you never finished what you were going to say in your previous line. yes i have keen senses, but i am not sure how that is relevant to the flow of this poem.

whirlingmind wrote:
Confusion, is merely the start
the start of what? what caused the confusion? keen senses? i have never been confused as to how i sense things.

whirlingmind wrote:

i have been lucky enough to have a good life. i am autistic as well.

whirlingmind wrote:

no one blames me for anything. i am not involved in any way in the mechanisms of other peoples lives, and so whatever goes wrong in their lives is not remotely attributable to me.

whirlingmind wrote:

every snail needs it's shell. if they do not have a shell then they will dehydrate rapidly (as well as expose themselves to a greater risk of attack (but what about slugs? they are like shell-less snails. whatever))

whirlingmind wrote:
You feel like everything's wrong
i do find fault with many trivial aspects of my world, but i feel that things are generally evolving in an expected manner.
whirlingmind wrote:

So you sing the saddest song
to who? if people do not make sense to you, then how could you imagine you would make sense to them? your saddest song could sound like just another yokel sing a country and western song ("i lost my love to the mississippi") to them. so what is the saddest song?

whirlingmind wrote:

i do not crave attention. i want to remain anonymous and steward my own way through life.

as for the rest, whatever.

i am not trying to lambaste you, but i am showing how desolate my own flood plains of social integrity are. i rarely have perfect inundations which spice the soil of my imagination. to me your poem was aimed at a different audience.

I don't comprehend your response whatsoever, either the purpose, tone or intention.

What a nasty attitude. If you don't care why did you even bother posting in the first place.

If you didn't understand my poem or identify with it, you could have just said "I don't identify" and left it at that. You say you weren't intending to lambaste me...but clearly you were!

Bye.

I liked your poem, and yes can relate some days. I don't think B9 was trying to be negative. He simply was making a literal examination of metaphorical phrases. Everyone has different thought processes.

I resonated with that deeply. I'm forced to leave it at that, otherwise it'll get too emotional for me. Very well written.

^ This, pretty much.

Yes I like the poem very much and regarding the "senses being too keen", I took that to mean that people on the autism spectrum often have sensitivity to smell, sound, and sight that an NT does not. For me I am sensitive to loud noises and also strong smells and sometimes bright lights. Recently I have realized I really dislike air freshener especially the kind that plugs into an electrical outlet. My belief is that people should keep their houses clean to begin with and I do not mind using a spray air freshener on furniture or in the air as it dissipates eventually and is not so overpowering.

Great poem 8)

Thank you guys.

@AScomposer13413: aw, I'm sorry that was emotional for you, flattered that I managed to capture what you feel, and want to reach out to you if you are low. Do PM me if you need to tell a like-minded soul. Or not, that's fine too, hang on in there anyway.

If you'd have read some that I wrote when I was 17 (a book's worth) full of pain and anguish, long before I knew I had AS, you'd be on the floor. I looked at them once years later, and it was like reading something someone else wrote weirdly. It's a shame that it's easiest for me to write about the sad stuff. But I can do creative writing that's positive too.

@Gazelle: yes that's what I meant, although I know some people on the spectrum are hypo-sensitive instead of hyper-sensitive.

About B9's comments. I think it was clear that as a poem, it would be somewhat metaphorical and lyrical. Although I understand that metaphors and figurative speech can be problematic for many of us, I think B9s comments were unnecessary and as a poem, it was obvious it wasn't meant for every line to be taken literally. He pulled it apart in some sort of harsh critique, and I couldn't understand why he felt the need to. Why talk about real spectacles and how his eyesight was when it's obvious it was referring to an Aspie's view of the world? It was as if he was saying "your poem is pointless, what are you talking about' and I couldn't understand the point of why he would do that, the question was: does it resonate - if it doesn't then say so or say nothing, don't pull it all apart needlessly.

Whirlingmind I thought that was really good! I particularly liked the first verse.

There is a lot in there that I can relate to, and being able to make it flow and rhyme nicely at the same time is a great talent.

Really well done. :D

I liked your poem also, it has good structure and flow, very meaningful.

I see one poor chap didn’t agree to what you were saying, he should try to remember this "Autism spectrum, everyone is different”.

He sounded like he was having a bad day.

yes i was trying to communicate what i perceived with respect to the poem. i can see that it rhymed (but i was not sure of the tempo (sometimes the author has to shoehorn into a line, a group of syllables in a strangely sped up tempo in order for the rhyming word to be said in the correct rhythmic position if the author can not think of alternative words that are correctly meted to iterate the line, and i have to decipher that tempo, which is sometimes difficult)).

i do agree that i should not have written my response because she was asking for people who identify with it to reply.

i pulled it apart in an attempt to understand it. i never denigrated the quality of your poem because i had no idea how it meant anything.

not all asperger people wear glasses, so i had to think carefully about what difference a "set of glasses" could make when someone is looking at something. i was not able to calculate what relevance "glasses" had.

whirlingmind wrote:

i did not think it was pointless. i just reported that i could not see the point.

you should have said that you were only seeking reinforcing responses and i would have decided against replying.
