advice from anyone who's ever face traced in Illustrator?

I really want to try to get into this digital art trend that seems, well, fairly easy to do if you are not overwhelmed by every single part of the face and hair and details in between that make this task more of a chore if you can't yet handle it. Has anyone ever accomplished this or have advice on perfecting the pen tool and/or combining layers...just anything having to do with tracing from a photo from off the internet and turning it into a similar replica?
