I never understood the appeal of "Stigmata." Not only is it not one of Ministry's best songs, it's not even one of the best songs on that album. "The Missing," "Deity," "Golden Dawn," and "The Land of Rape and Honey" are far better. What is it that made people latch on to such a simplistic and silly-sounding song like "Stigmata"? Is it like Ministry's version of "Lick it Up"?

You want some Ministry? Here's some Ministry:

Would Disillusion's first record count?

I'm going to clarify I like the more melodic forms of Industrial Metal. Ministry is okay, but I don't really like Godflesh or Fear Factory.

Ministry are fecking epic, best slice of industrial around. And Godflesh are simply crushing.

I love all types of Industrial. As far as Industrial metal, I would say....
Godflesh
Fear Factory
Nailbomb
Swans
Hanzel und Gretyl
The album "Blackacidevil" from Danzig
Genitorturers
Bile
Rammstein
Birmingham 6
Die Krupps
The album "Tonight the Stars Revolt" by Powerman 5000

Some of this may be more Heavy Industrial than Industrial Metal.

You can't go wrong with some early Pitchshifter (first two full lengths and EP), very Godflesh like and bone crushingly good.
I enjoy some Fear Factory but am not a fan of too many bands who have a more groove oriented approach, so my two favourite releases unsurprisingly happen to be "Concrete" (industrial death metal with grindcore elements) and "Soul of a New Machine" (industrial dm). "Demanufacture" and "Obsolete" are pretty good too though.

A lot of good black metal bands have experimented with industrial and done it well - Aborym, Blut Aus Nord, Mysticum, Thorns, Dodheimsgard etc.

On another note Skrew, later Prong, later Samael, The Electric Hellfire Club and Frontline Assembly may be worth checking out too.

And of course there's KILLING JOKE, not only one of my favourite post punk acts ever but in my opinion trailblazers for this entire subgenre... If you don't know who they are look them up now.

Killing Joke is fantastic, but I'm not sure I'd classify them as industrial metal, even though they've undeniably had a huge influence on a lot of industrial metal bands.

As for Fear Factory, I always considered them more of a death metal band than industrial metal, even though they've absolutely got industrial metal elements. Call it industrial death metal, I guess. Whatever you call it, Demanufacture is a nearly perfect album.

I'd also include White Zombie's Astro-Creep: 2000 in this category. It deserves comparison to Demanufacture not just in style but also in quality. Every song on it is a winner. Ministry obviously had a big influence here.

The early Pitchshifter albums sound a lot like Godflesh. And since I can't stand Godflesh, I tend to gravitate toward the later Pitchshifter, which sounds like an entirely different band. www.pitchshifter.com is an utterly terrific album, although I also wouldn't classify it as industrial metal. Techno rock, maybe?

I think Pop Will Eat Itself deserves a mention here, although they didn't really turn to industrial rock/metal per se until later in their career.

I forgot about PWEI. Maybe Chemlab and KMFDM would qualify too.

I agree, when I call them trailblazers I simply mean they really did a big part in opening the door for so many industrial metal acts.

I don’t know man, I most certainly wouldn’t call ‘Demanufacture’ or anything produced after that death metal. Industrial metal seems more fitting, for their newer stuff maybe even industrial groove metal. Now, Soul of a New Machine and Concrete are industrialized death metal IMO, with Concrete even touching on grindcore at times.

Aside from the song “Mirrors Paradise” I’m not too big of a fan, but I’m surprised to see that the Kovenant haven’t been mentioned yet.

Oh, and I second the White Zombie rec. my favourite release being La Sexorcisto..
