I really like Japanese music! :) If I had to pick a few favorites then I'd go with Utada Hikaru and Ayaka.

I never understood why everyone was so excited about Ayumi though..?

i don't know much about J-Pop, but they have a wonderful anthem.
it's rather slow and it only has several lines but it has a marvelous poetic quality only they can pull off.
here's my favorite rendition, actual anthem starts at 1:24.

Old-school Japanese song. Only one to make it to #1 in the US.

A couple of J-Pop songs from around the year 2000

This one's a cover of a Backstreet Boys song:

Japan has a surprisingly solid reggae, ska and rocksteady scene which I rather dig. Apparently there's been an underground niche there for Jamaican music since the 1980s. It's a plentiful scene but I haven't been able to dig too deep into it because most of it is rather hard to find for a gaijin like myself; I've relied largely on old US compilations of Japanese bands and The Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, who occasionally tour the West and East coasts. They're absolutely phenomenal musicians, probably the most exceptionally talented in the genre today.
