Does anybody else find this hymn to be comforting?
The hymn "Abide With Me" is about having faith in, and gaining strength from, an ever-unchanging entity (God).
To a religious person, the message of the hymn is "When change and decay is all around you, have faith in your God, and take strength from Him".
I am an agnostic myself, so the hymn does not have the same religious meaning for me. However, I do, like most people on WP, have Asperger's Syndrome. One of the main symptoms of AS is poor ability to adapt to change in one's life, so the concept of something that is steadfast and unchanging is very appealing to me.
By the nature of the hymn's wording, a number of non-religious interpretations are possible. To me, in a world where I must withstand so many changes, the hymn ~itself~ remains as something unchanging from which I can gain strength.
