For the readers of H.P. Lovecraft out in WP, I just wanted to know, how do each of you pronounce the name of Lovecraft's most famous creation, Cthulhu? I personally pronounce it as Ktulu.

Mere mortals are physically incapable of pronouncing the true name of this Elder God. Of course, in casual conversation, I just pronounce it as "kithulu", even though I know this pronunciation to be incorrect.

When Metallica wrote "The Call of Ktulu", they purposefully misspelled the Elder God's name as a reference to its unpronounceability. Cliff Burton was a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft's work, and he wanted to honor it when he worked on this song. ;)

I f*****g LOVE that song. It's nearly 9 minutes long but it goes by so quickly because of how awesome it is. :D

I've never heard this particular song before.
Who'd have guessed Lovecraft would be embraced by heavy metal!

This has been bugging me. What I want to know then, in light of this thread, was if Lovecraft himself was ever heard to pronounce Cthulhu aloud, and if so, how?
I'd just go ahead and treat that as the official way.

Personally, I've been saying "kuh-thoo-loo."

Maybe that's why I've been sacrificing squirrels to the Old Ones, and eating feces out of the toilet. :eew:

When you get to the page, there should be a play button just below the title. It will let you stream the story as an mp3....

A little known fact is that it is actually pronounced "Brian". It's just that all the letters are silent.
