I do like to tinker a bit and I've been working factory production floors for more than 25 years, so I designed my own machine, a CNC routing table, built it myself, and then toward the end got a little anxious. I threw a temporary X-Axis drive together and ran a couple of pieces.

This was my first piece, a mantle board in 1" white oak, 48" long x 6" tall without the strip of scrap on the top.

My second. A small medallion, wood was a piece of scrap so type of wood unknown, 6" Dia.

I did a few more, but all showed me some changes I need to make on the machine, mostly to the incomplete X drive gearbox. Surprise, surprise. But I think it's a good start. Just wish I had a shop instead of trying this in the living room of a 640 sqft apartment. I'll need to use the machine as it's set up now to make the pieces required for the rebuild, but that's not an issue other than taking the time to do it.

Don't have to be have to be an artist to make art.

(Edit, now that I think about it maybe this would be more appropriate under "Hobbies" than "Art". Mix of both?)

Nice!

The old way of doing things similar to this was a Rose Engine Lathe. A late family friend actually made one from scratch!

I had to look that one up. Very complex machine, all analog. I'm impressed!

Some of the old machines can do the same as CNC only far slower. I have some oval boxes made on late friend's lathe.

Another to look up is an Ornamental Lathe which is a little less complex.

You have made art. If you make art, you are an artist. You've just used a different set of tools to create art. If you were not artistic, you would not have been able to create these things, no matter what tools you used. I'd say that it's not that you're not artistic, so much as you just hadn't found the right tools yet to be able to express your art. Now you have. Nicely done.

Most fun I've had in forever. :D Better yet, once it's done I can make some side cash in the process of having fun. Just too many positives in the idea to pass it up.

I guess when (if) I can find a new girlfriend it would be better to have that in the living room than a huge model of the starship USS Enterprise hanging from the ceiling.

It depends on the gal. I'm not sure which way my bride would go--she is very fond of classic Star Trek. (She's spoken for, however!! )

I definitely agree. These are beautiful pieces of art.

Also, did you make the model of the Enterprise too? Thats pretty awesome if you did!
