I wrote this poem based on a dream I had several months ago. A garibaldi is a bright orange fish, I used to live on Catalina Island and would see them loitering about the piers. They’re quite lovely, although the dream itself was sort of apocalyptic.

Anyway, the pre-edited poem:

I watched yesterday as
Muddy oceans swept away
A beach, only leaving umbrellas
In the wave’s wake

We evacuated to the piers
And watched with wonder as
Thousands of rays, tiger sharks,
Fish of all kinds congregated

The garibaldi stood out
Nuzzling the toes of tourists
Soon, the rays lost their shyness
And smiled with the sharks at us

The beaches are swarming with
Smiling orange and black and
Spotted skins, enjoying life
As we watched from the piers

I’ve noticed after prolonged soaking
My toes have turned to garibaldis
They are orange and smiling, clear
Now that the mud has disappeared
