Every novel Philip Roth has ever written:

I'm Jewish.
blah blah blah.
I'm horny.
blah blah blah.
Just leave me in my misery.

I've only read Portnoy's Complaint, but that sums it up perfectly. Good Lord, I hate that book with a passion. If the rest of his books are like that shitfest, you should add "I have serious mommy issues and I like non-Jewish girls."

Where'd you find it?

I kind of made that up, but it was based on a humorous book of "very concise literature" that did not include Roth but should have.

I quite liked Portnoy's Complaint when I read it a few years ago.

So, anyway, after that I went and got another Philip Roth book from the library, called The Dying Animal.

And I couldn't stand it. I got through maybe fifteen pages before I was thinking, "for God's sake, write about something else!"

Btw, this thread reminds me of something I read in the paper a while back - a list of the 100 most overrated books of all time. There was a snippet that went something like ...

53: Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

He's a dirty old man. Wow.

54: On The Road by Jack Kerouac

He likes drugs. Wow.

55: The Naked Lunch by William Burrooughs

He's a dirty old man who likes drugs. Wow.

That's funny. Roth could be the most un-aspie author going. I also find his novels dated. Their aesthetics and preoccupations belong to an older generation, IMHO. The only reason I've bothered to read any of his books is because he is generally regarded as a great writer, but I just don't see it. The man writes about a Newark that is either long gone or never really existed in the first place.
