Has anyone read Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer? I'm re-reading the first four books in the series. They are pretty cool, despite being catered to a younger audience (10-14 or so... I'm 17 and I enjoy reading them). Here's a short synopsis for those who haven't heard of it...

Personally, I think Fowl has some Aspie tendencies, although saying he's got Aspergers is a little too inaccurate. For those who haven't read it, it's an entertaining read, combining magical fantasy elements with a touch of sci-fi. There are also four sequels: Arctic Incident, Eternity Code, and Opal Deception, along with a fourth that I can't remember just now.

By the way, has anyone reading the series bothered to translate the Gnnomish at the bottom of Book I? My friend said it talks about spit, but I don't entirely trust him :roll:

I love the series, and I translated it too, I can't remember what it said, but it did not involve spit. None of the books' translations involve spit. The basically have the translated text, and it is repeated all the way through the book.

I found the first few enjoyable, didn't bother reading more than those though.

I read the first three. Liked the first two. Found the third one gratuitous. Holly Short gives me hope for female characters. She's my hero.

Butler is armed to the tooth, in addition to having superb hand-to-hand combat skills. Though it may depend on whether Captain Short is running low on magic. If Butler has his sunglasses, all bets for Holly are off, because the mesmer's all she has on him.

GO to page 26 of the original book, the letters correspond between the Gnommish on that page and the "translated" on the next. It''s fairly straightforward. The message at the bottom offers congratulations for having deciphered it and directs you to a website.

Go figure! *slaps forehead* That's how I learned to write in runes, by reading The Hobbit. I took the picture of Thorin's map and compared the runes to Thorin's translation on page 20 and Elrond's tranlsation on page 50.

Ok, I need some time... and paper. lots of paper.

Ok, I have determined the translation of the fairy alphabet to English letters. Not very hard, considering I've done it once before with the runes from The Hobbit. I managed to translate everything but the glyphs for J, Q, X, and Z. I then proceeded to translate the fairy text at the bottom of each page. In addition to providing the letters for the remaining alphabet (except for Q, which I have not encountered yet), it tells a story of a prophecy given by the phlegm pot cleaner to the ancient elfin king Frond. I only got as far as page 30, though, and Artemis Fowl Book I is about 279 pages long. This might have to be a summer-long project...
