So what are your opinions on him, the man and his music?

I must say I am quite a fan, although I used to be more fanatic a few years ago. I got into MM when he released Mechanical Animals, which is still his best album to date IMO. The sleeve picture and especially the red eyes had something special: something cold, emotionless, eerie... In a weird way I was attracted to it.

I gave the album a go and I really liked it. Metal and glam in a very nice combination, some thoughtful lyrics as well, and the promo videos further enhanced the fascination. I then bought Antichrist Superstar and Portrait of an American Family as well and quickly became a fan.

Basically I just like the total package. The music is good and he is creative enough to give every album a new direction and sound (from industrial on the first album to very heavy metal on Antichrist Superstar, glam on Mechanical Animals, back to the darker heavy sound on Holy Wood, etc). I also like his lyrics, they usually have a lot of thought. I disagree that his lyrics would be anti-religious or shocking ; they may be criticising certain aspects of organised religion but I don't consider MM as an anti-religious band and definitely not satanic. Those who feel shocked by his lyrics maybe did not read between the lines well enough, took things too literally instead of trying to read his message his is trying to spread. Also, although purely a commercial efford, I liked his version of Tainted Love a lot.

Purely musically and visually I like Marilyn Manson a lot. I must add though that I am glad he ditched the self-harming, nudity, sexual acts etc and that a concert nowadays is just a band performing. A good band doesn't need to do shocking stage acts, because this gives the impression that it covers a lack of musical skill + it attracts a sort of audience I rather stay clear from. Luckily he removed most shock elements from his stage acts and focusses on what it really is about: good music. I have seen him live 5x by now, and was never disappointed.

So if there'd be other people here that like him: what are your favourite albums, videos, songs?

My own list:

best album: Mechanical Animals

best songs: Dope Hat, Dogma, Irresponsable Hate Anthem, Cryptorchid, The Reflecting God, Great Big White World, Coma White, The Nobodies, Tainted Love, Rock is Dead

best videos: Dope Show, Coma White, The Nobodies, and Tainted Love (uncensored please :D )

Love Marilyn Manson! Saw him a couple of years ago at Alexandra Palace in London. Don't like the latest album quite as much as the earlier stuff though.

The last album was a drastic change as he for the first time sang about really personal issues like love and break-ups, and the sound was a lot more back-to-basics as it was recorded by Tim Skold and Manson only without any influx of other elements or band members. Manson called the album before his "farewell album" by which he meant that the new material would have a new direction, which indeed happened on Eat Me Drink Me.

Skold now left the band however and former bassist (and fan favourite) Twiggy Ramirez returned. So I have the feeling the new album may be a return to the sound of the older material. I would love another glam-esque album like Mechanical Animals but I think we can expect more something like an album in the same style of Antichrist Superstar.

i understand he was a registered member of anton lavay's "church of Satan", witch is more an antithesis of Christianity rather than actually worshiping "satan"

also marilyn manson (the singer) wrote little of the music untill the last (two?) albums, though all the lyrics, eg. antichrist superstar was mostly written by jeordie white (aka. twiggy ramirez, also of APC and one of the main reasons i picked up bass)

so yea i used to love marilyn manson though i haven't listened to it a whole lot recently

*sits back and waits for Veresae*

Manson writes most of the lyrics (the overwhelming majority) while it were mostly Twiggy and later Tim Skold taking care of the music. Check the songwriting credits ;)

Manson was once approached by Anton Szandor LaVey to become a priest in the Church of Satan. As a media stunt, Marilyn Manson accepted that role but it was just to make the press and the headlines. He never ever performed a ceremony and never even attended one as far as I know ; he does not practice satanism nor does he believe in its rules, so basically he accepted a certain title just to make the press headlines... He is just a staunch atheist but not a satanist like some people think.

He's a very smart man, even if his sound does kind of rip Depeche Mode off a tad too much for my liking.

I approve of the way he tries to push boundaries.

However... he kinda only has two or three songs. The slow creepy one and the big loud glam one...

At his peak he made fundamentalists embarrass themselves foaming at the mouth in moral hysteria not seen since McCarthyism with consummate ease. And for that, I respect him. A lot.

His singles are often a bit the same style but then they deliberalety choose those ones to attract the big audience.

Listen to some non-singles though and hear the wide variety of styles he's been tackling... For example songs like Cryptorchid are really special and unlike any other of his songs, GodEatGod, the hidden track on Mechanical Animals etc are also unlike his other slow songs.

And definitely a very intelligent person! I really liked his contribution to Bowling for Columbine. When asked what he'd do when meeting the shooters, he replied "I would listen to them, because that's the one thing nobody has done". That was such an amazingly good response.

PS: in which way do you hear similarities between him and Depeche Mode? I like DM as well, but I don't hear a lot of similarities with MM.

Listen to 'Personal Jesus,' then his cover of it. They sound virtually identical. That sound that he used on that cover has been used for a good deal of his material.

I love MM, but I have to say that I really hate most of Eat Me Drink Me. I love the single, but that's it. The worst part was that I had to listen to it at work - pre-release listening party - complete with intros by him. I love his singing voice, but holy crap his speaking voice is monotonous! I drowned him out after awhile.

Other than that, I love the energy, even in the slower songs, and I love his covers, whether or not they differ much from the original. And I've loved DM since I was a little girl, and that may be part of why I love MM's style so much :D

What did you make of him and Dita? She's had a few awful minor roles in movies. She looks bleh now. I think she was stronger with him.

How? She's still successful without him. And his new little girlfriend can NOT [though she tries] pull off the gothic '40s noir look like Dita can..

Anyway, I think he's okay. I haven't listened to all his stuff, but there's a few songs I really like-- Coma Black and Coma White especially.
