I need some information.
See, I've only got mild autism, ADHD, severe anxiety/social phobia, depression and a learning disability. I don't really know a whole lot about those with moderate to severe autism or asperger Syndrome/High functioning autism. I've always wanted to write this story about a girl with moderate to severe autism with moderate sensory integration traits, involving touch, sense and smell...but I can't find the information I want.
What I want to know is what sort of things do kids with moderate to severe autism say when they finally do speak? Do they know all of their needs in order to speak or do they have trouble speaking and only learn words...and how do they do it? I had a developmental delay with my speech but I was really really young, I don't remember much about knowing it so I can't help myself.

Could it be possible to imitate words from a favorite tv show? I was just curious because I know usually, autistics imitate, but at a higher age the normal developed kids would.
I was in speech until I reached high school and they said I no logner needed it and also werent sure why I did either, but since I had a speech delay when I was younger, I knew I was put in speech because of that. XD
I didnt find out about my autism until my junior year. It made alot of sense to me because I do have a few mild rituals, things I obsess over and talk about over and over and over and over, driving my parents insane and they always said I was like a scratched record. I still go on about my obsessions but usually when I get hyper about something. XD
I do know that must autistics follow rituals, very intensely and seem to be obsessed with everything when they get older, if they ever do learn to speak. I should have apserger syndrome too but I know that they don't have an delay in speaking. I just figure since I have social phobia and hate being around people all the time, it made sense.

unless you're doing a psychological study, just cover the basics (which it sounds like you've done). The point of a character is to make the reader care, and only a few people are going to nitpick it anyway (and they'll do that no matter what).
You're writing a story, so as long as you're true to the story in general, you can include as much or as little of AS as you need to. Besides, generally the character is going to develop throughout the story, so the symptoms will be of less and less importance as the tale progresses.
Or that's what I remember from creative writing....![]()
Make an appointment with a doctor or someone that specializes in this stuff, and prepare yourself making a list of all your questions!
BTW tape it to avoid writing everything down (:
