Who are some of your favorite artists? Say why if you feel like it, if it's anything more than you just enjoy the style of their work. Have at it.

As for myself, I like many of the standards: Picasso, Van Gogh, etc. But I'd have to say two of my favorite artists are Frida Kahlo

and Max Beckmann.

(He had a cheery mug didn't he?)

Not that Frida Kahlo isn't a standard since the movie Frida. But I like to brag that I knew and enjoyed her even before the movie came out. :P Her symbolism impresses me the most I think.

Also, not that Beckmann isn't ultra famous, too. But as for him, I find his darker style and the grotesque nature of his human subjects absolutely fascinating.

All in all, me likey. :D

Err, well, the work of Rowland Emett, said Emettman.
(see picturetrail site from my profile)

More conventionally: Turner, Magritte, Dali...

I had mixed feelings on discovering that my long-loved Turner painting "The Fighting Temeraire" came out as Britain's favourite in a BBC poll.

The greats of the Italian Renaissance: Michelangelo Buonarroti (Michelangelo), Raffaello Santi (Raphael) and Leonardo da Vinci, simply for embodying the values of the Renaissance and for producing such an unequalled body of work.
I've also got to include Michelangelo Merisi (Caravaggio) and Sandro Botticelli (the latter included for the magnificent Primavera).
Others that spring to mind: Sir Joshua Reynolds and Jean-Antoine Gros. Bit of an eclectic mix...

I'm not a very 'cultured' person

But I really like Salvador Dali's style. There are also some Picasso paintings I like, but I really don't 'get' cubism

Traditionally: Escher, Dali, Van Gogh, E. Munch (I say this as I have a poster of The Scream).

I would also rank pu-sama from deviantart "up there" not on a list of being "classic" but on a list of my favorites, in all seriousness. She does really awesome stuff.

That and probably Hiroaki Samura (the guy who does the Hellsing mangas) on a related note.

Definitely MC Escher, da Vinci, Michelangelo... those would have to be my few top favourites, especially Escher. There are a couple of sites (like deviantart) that I've seen online that are extremely good, but I can't remember the artists' names. :|

M.C. Escher, Piet Mondriaan and Lawren Harris are my favourites among the better-known artists.

From the science fiction/fantasy art world I like Matt Stawicki; Larry Elmore (even if his women's armour does tend to defy gravity and common sense); and Ursula Vernon. Used to like Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo till I got tired of the "he-man fighting prehistoric monstrosities in the mist" idiom.

And I really like John Tenniel's drawings in Alice in Wonderland.
