Everybody tells me I would like this band. I would like to try them out.

Any song recommendations? Just to give me somewhere to start.

I'm not a fan but I've discovered them thanks to Guitar Hero and I have to say that Schism is a great song, as well as Parabola.

The thing is, Tool has changed quite a bit since their first material back in the early 90s. Initially, they had a much cruder and more aggressive sound, and then they became increasingly progressive and experimented with their style, their time signatures, their lyrics, and the instruments they used. Either extreme could be daunting. For that reason, I'd recommend anything off the album Aenima (1996) as a good starting point-- it's sort of their transitional album between the two approaches, and in my opinion, still their greatest work (although Lateralus does come very close). For a new listener, I would especially recommend "Stinkfist", "H" and "46 and Two" to get started.

Or, if you want to just jump straight to their most recent work, try "Vicarious".

Yes, Sober is a great song, probably my favorite of theirs. I haven't listened to Tool in many years, so I can't give much specific guidance, but they're a really good band in general and there's not much you can go wrong with.

Thanks for the suggestions. I listened to the songs Schism and Vicarious a few nights ago on last.fm, they both sounded good. I find that bands have to kind of grow on me though, so I'll give the rest of your suggestions a go. Thanks.

Ænima and Sober would be good places to "start" w Tool, to get their sound. they got several more intense tunes, some lasting 8 minutes, that arent really fit for good 1st impressions, cus theyre looooong

The "progressive metal" tag in general strikes me as misleading - used to describe such distinct bands as Tool, Opeth and Dream Theater. Tool's earlier material like Undertow is more picking up where bands like Jane's Addiction left off, and as their career progressed their music didn't change very much in style.

"Sober" is sort of their catchy singalong song, and it's nice but that's worth keeping in mind. If you like that one but also several of their others then their first three albums are probably all safe bets.
