This band was a mild obsession of mine a few years ago, then I totally forgot about them, and now I'm completly obsessed again so I though I'd post here to see if anyone else is a fan or if I can turn anyone else into a fan.

Basically there a collection of squatters from Montreal, who, whilst insisting that their a rock band, play operatic 20 minuite long pieces that can be broken down into different movements. They have at least nine members but have had as many as 20 at one point, using everything from tape loops too a french horn. Yeah, I discovered them like 2 years ago and for some time I used to listen to them quite often, then I kind of forgot them, thanks for this thread, it helped me remember them, I'll post the second part of my fav song. I like this one especially for the spoken part, especially between 1.55 and 3.00, I find it beautifully hypnotic, inspiring, and then comes the musical storm...amazing, take a listen (does this expression exist in english ? )

Yes. I love them. Listening to GY!BE is like a musical orgasm. It's fitting that they decided to include an exclamation mark in their name.

I must admit, while Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven is absolutely sublime, I have found the rest of their work rather inaccessible and a bit dull.

I think I'm the only person whose favourite record is Yanqui UXO.

I am a huge post-rock fan. GYBE! is probably my favorite of the sub-genre. I was extremely fortunate enough to see them in Vermont right before they broke up. It was amazing!

So yes...great great band, and an understandable obsession.

Y'know, I really didn't like Yanqui at first, but the more I listen to it, the more I like it. Which means it holds the unique distinction of being the only album it has ever taken me years to learn to appreciate. Either I'm very slow (always a possibility ) or I'm just not sure what to think about that.

Lift Your Skinny Fists > Yanqui U.X.O. >> F#A#<infinity sign>.

Despite that so many people call F#A#infinity their masterpiece, I think it's lacking compared to the other two full lengths. Yanqui U.X.O. took several weeks to "understand" but after it clicks, it's amazing. Probably the most "punk"/"post-punk" of their recordings in my opinion, if saying that about a Montreal-style post-rock band isn't blasphemy.

I've read some interviews witht them recently and they definatly thought of themselves as a rock band, they seemed to get quite offended when their music was said to be classical or post rock. Also they had a lot of good things to say about black flag and henry rollins so the punk comment is propably quite accurate. They took a lot of the mentality of punk even if they didn't have the musical style.

I don't care for the rest of F#A#<infinity sign> but the "East Hastings" track definitely rocks.
