Why do boys want good-looking girls?

....
I bet if a girl gets to know you, she'll like you for who you are, much more than the guys you just described... good luck finding her
But the problem is that
a) despite the fact that many girls CLAIM that they want a guy who is sweet and caring, their actions would indicate otherwise. And why the hell would anyone assume that the good looking guys are going to be the nice ones. No, really. If you understand the chain of reasoning that would lead a girl to that conclusion, please share it with us. This is one of the great mysteries of the universe. My personal explanation is that for most people hormones speak louder than reason. And it is a documented fact in recent brain research that humans often decide things first at the emotional or insticntive level, and then quickly follow up by inventing something that sounds like logic to explan their behavior to themselves.
b) most girls (in my experience) won't stay interested long enough to find out who a guy really is, especially if he's not outgoing or assertive.
No offense intended to you personally, but girls are just as hormonally driven as guys, and trying to get through to an actual thinking creature behind the hormones can be a very frustrating undertaking.
I think you nailed it right on the head there, Brian.
With some semi-obsessive research over the last few years, it seems girl are attracted to the danger of a guy who's unpredictable, and also attracted to a guy who doesn't give them attention. Girls receive flattering attention from several guys every day. It boosts her ego, she knows she is beautiful and wanted. When a guy DOESN'T feed this attention, she can become obsessed in trying to get that attention from him and is drawn in. In some extreme cases, a girl in an abusive relationship will stay because she wants to prove to him (whereas guys normally need to impress girls) that she is worthy of his affections. His attention is unpredictable and different, and it's hard for her to keep her eyes off him.
This is a general theory, obviously not applying to everyone. Honestly Lucille, I hope you are an exception, because I look at that phenomenon and shake my head. The guys they turn away without a second glance are the ones who will respect them the most.
Basically, I've settled for girl 'friends' than 'girlfriends'. The former I find are easy to talk to if there is a reason to say hi, say a group activity in a uni course. The latter is practically impossible under all circumstances. I want to have a girlfriend, and enjoy having one (when I have one), but it's just so damn hard...

What is this "happiness" you speak of? I know nothing of it...

KIDDING! Come on - you really think an overachiever would have anything to do with *me*?! A person like that would grow bored with me very quickly. Besides - someone like that would only make me feel worse about myself - you know, zero ambition coupled with too many IQ points = recipe for disaster...yay.
P.S. Check it - I quoted myself! How d0rky is that?! \m/

It's very scientific. When you look at a beautiful person rather than an ugly person, it usually means they're more physically evolved than another person. It's human nature to want to pass on "good genes" to their offspring. That's why people generally choose good looking and healthy looking people for spouses. Even if you don't want children, your mamalian brain (the brain that is still left over when we were monkeys that controls hungry, sex drive, and other basic means of survival) thinks you still will have children.
This means that subconsciously you want your baby to have good genes, which means that you need a spouse that has good genes.
If you go to a museum where they have human evolution, you can tell the differences between people now and people then. People now have higher cheekbones (which is now considered a sign of beauty), smaller noses (who wants a girl with a big honkin' nose?), and a more angular shaped face.
Now, on to why some people, like yourself, don't care about what people really look like. You have probably learned to control your mamalian brain better than most people. That means that you are actually more human, and more mentally evolved than most people.
It's funny, isn't it?
Disclaimer: This isn't true fact, it's just my own personal theory that seems to make a lot of sense...to me, at least. Also, I'm not trying to offend anyone who's ugly here, because although the hot blonde who serves you lunch at your favorite resturant may be prettier than you, that doesn't mean she more mentally evolved.
We're all special in our own special ways.

What's good looking anyway?
Each male has his own sets of desires, both learned and instinctive. Same for each girl. It's like the comic Rose-is-Rose, Jimbo, who constantly has to fight the temptation to ogle the "good looking" fat waitress while Rose is around. There really are people like that. No really.
I myself don't experience attraction, possibly something to do with the facial recognition thing. There are certain feels I like, such as the softest plastic fiber on this plush rabbit I found, or the feel of our latest cat Sophie--her fur is very soft and smooth. I could describe in more detail, but for some of us sexual urges aren't even sight driven at all, perhaps we're attracted to what feels good for instance!
And even for the oglers, who wants to look at some boring old stereotypical beauty? I can understand not being attracted to sickness and degeneration, but when you're dealing with perfectly healthy people, whether 110 or 200 lbs, wouldn't it be smarter if we were attracted to diversity? It's the stupid social rank that gets us chasing after supermodels. Guys challenge each other to find the more "qualified" beauty in passing women. It's pretty sick, but I've seen this before.
Some poor lad will say "She's pretty," and immediately get rebuffed, even if she is pretty for all parties concerned. The game is to find flaws in what your friends think is pretty, so as to dominate your friends and make them respect your superior judgement. Makes no difference if she's pretty or not. It always makes me feel so sick to see it happening, but at the same time I'm not ... good enough to inervene or protest. Just sit there and roll my eyes, and know that they'll get over their little posturing ritual soon enough.
So put a normal, heterosexual male alone, and chances are he'll be able to see beauty in a vast amount of diverse body types. He may even be ashamed and try to conceal, if his ideal woman is not what he has been taught is acceptable to be attracted to. In groups though, you got yourself groupthink, and no matter who they choose the others are going to chime in with how the chooser has much left to learn, and is not a good judge, until everyone is afraid to say someone's pretty unless Barbie(tm) stilts by.

Well, I know that I've almost always found that the girls I consider attractive had soft, fine features. Every now and then I find an exception to this, but I would say 90-95% of women follow that trend.
So, I can't say I conform to that idea, but then again, I - and all of us for that matter - don't think like NTs...

Unfortunately not. I sold it all to a tramp for a jellyfish. But I could send you the recipe.

Sorry, but I just don't believe people who say that looks don't matter to them at all. It's bullsh1t, as far as I'm concerned, unless a person is legally blind.
