I remember falling in love. And part of it, was falling in love with parts of me that I saw in the other. Some were strengths. Other parts were insecurities or struggles we shared.

There are so many similarities between many of us here, on this website. Both in strengths and struggles. That makes it easier for me to connect than some picture perfect.

One example that stuck with me is when kiddo came home with a school assignment. He had to draw himself in animal form.
He chose a turtle with a big shell and a big belly.
When I asked him to tell me about why he chose a turtle, he shared that he felt like he needed a protective shell from the bullies. But that the shell was also home where he could safely be himself.
And then he said that the belly was his tummy. Because we all 3 have a tummy and love handles. Sometimes we cry about being teased all our lives about not being the skinniest. Sometimes we rub it for good luck. It's the bonding about our shells and the tummies that makes us a loving family.

I can only hope that kiddo will come to this site someday in the future and see himself through all the mirrors here. And that he would feel right at home and play with all the other turtles.

Sly it used to be worse. People didn't marry for love, they married because it was the done thing.

Especially for women. They didn't have many rights and needed a man for financial support.

And the upper classes married for money and prominence, not love. They then just slept around with whomever they wanted after the first male child was born as an heir to their estate.

Now we are all free to choose. Both men and women.

I'll admit that we do live in a materialistic society, but there's no point glamourising a past that wasn't glamorous.

Romantic love has always be a luxury unfortunately.

Well it use to be better in the 1960s-1990s
While women aren't being forced to marry they are marrying for the same reason they were forced to Mary back then. Does the fact that they've been brainwashed to believe it's their idea now make it any better, no it doesn't.

Wish I'd been around for the time of love and rebelling against materialistic society. When women dated a guy because he was grovy and not how much he makes

those hippy baby boomers became yuppies eventually, and the worst materialists of all time.

The 80s were the worst for glamourising wealth and success.

For example at the end of back to the future Marty's happy ending is that his parents have more money and he gets a fancy 4x4.

Pfft, I know you don't believe that. I've been hostile and nonconstructive on this site, plus I do have that bad habit of talking about myself too much in threads. Besides which, I just just don't fit in. There is no reason anyone here would consider me cool.

My avatar is actually a good depiction of me. Even though that creature, the Sabreclaw, is just an enemy from a video game I enjoy, it's a pretty good analogy for how people, women especially, perceive me - a harmless but ugly monster.

I think you're a total badass.

The direct honesty, the strong sense of realism ("pessimism" to most people)

You're also funnier than you think you are.

Interestingly I find extreme negativity very funny.

You're no Spiderpig, but your deadpan bitterness is amusing.

If only you could find a woman similar, your siulmate in bitterness to be happily miserble with together.

Maybe try and seek a misanthrope.

Not being sarcastic at all, I gejunely wish it wee easier for negative people to date, especially without falling into a toxic relationship together.

Disagree. Things aren't better, just different.

I believe humanity goes in cycles - liberal one century, conservative the next, etc.

You'd be surprised how many tribes, now non exist ant and currently existing ones, have been found to contain almost absolute egalitarian societies and small scale anachro-communist structures.

Life will always have positives and negatives.

Ancient romans did not have racism, openly accepted homosexuality, made innovative progress regarding demoracy, yet women did not have equal rights. They also had legal slavery.

US colonial times 'all men are created equal' yet women didn't have equality then as racism was still rampant in those times, along with slavery. Homophobia.

Today's society, very liberal but racism, materialistic, government more controlling than ever, we now have SJW politically Correct society where anyone with different views is silenced

Slavery still technically exists in other forms (sexual slavery, etc).

It is embarrassing some millenials actually think this is the most free wve ever been.

Bet the British in 1800 thought that, ignorant of what third worlders had to endure.

I bet society will be conservative and then become liberal again and the people of 2400 will laugh at how unfree WE were.
