Do racial preferences make you a racist?
Once again, for people who think the aesthetics of what a person is attracted to is hard-wired like our sexual orientation is--if you watch the video I posted of an episode of a highly respected show from our national public broadcasters the CBC called "The Nature of Things with David Suzuki" you will see that research is currently being done which shows just how much culture and personal experience can influence what we are drawn to in members of the sex we are naturally attracted to. The most relevant bit is the last 20 minutes or so, when they are talking about the experiments being done with rats at Concordia University in Montreal showing how experiences of pleasure can alter an individual's preferences in regards to choosing mates, and how an analogous process in human brains may be a part of what influences how we choose partners and what we find pleasurable and what we seek out.
We as humans may be animals, but we also have something in our lives that most animals do not* and that is culture--and we all to some extent are immersed in culture and cannot completely escape its influence on our psyche and our behaviour. We as complex humans are not slaves to instinct--but we are beginning to see that even in the animal kingdom it is not as simple as "animals pair up to propagate their genetic material and instinct based on the reproductive impulse drives mate choice"--even animals can be influenced by individual experience and by pleasure-seeking. Sometimes the pleasure-seeking response can override the instinctive reproductive impulse; sometimes pleasure-seeking takes precedence and priority over instinct, even in animal species like rats.
(*with the exception of some other species with complex social structures that live in interdependent groups like
chimps that may be said to have rudimentary "proto-cultures")
Here is the link again for the episode of the Nature of Things, called "Decoding Desire":

I don't know if I 100% agree that sexual orientation is completely hard-wired, think there can be other factors as well that play a role. What I heard once was that humans innately have a sexual attraction to those consider exotic or part of some other visible demographic group for the sake of ensuring genetic diversity which kind of flies in the face of the idea that humans are naturally racist but perhaps it happens simultaneously. I do think familiarity or other developmental factors probably play a big role in what you find yourself attracted to, I've heard whites guys my whole life say they weren't attracted to black women and I imagine that is because of the foreign aspect of it and perhaps racial bias and prejudice as well but I grew up around more black folk than I did white at school at least so I had a fairly "diverse" upbringing for the lack of a better term and to cut it short I do find black women to be attractive as they were peers at a certain time in my development.
I think it makes sense for people to want a partner from a similar cultural background, rejecting their own race I think probably says something tho about themselves that's not so great. I'm sorry if it's offensive but probably any white girl that has said "I'm not attracted to white guys" is bad news and that's the nicest terms, that was my experience where I grew up so I imagine it different somewhere else. I think you have to be really superficial to care so much certain physical traits that it is a deciding "preference." Your free to have preferences and people are free to judge people for said preferences.
at the end of the day there are beautiful people in all races. but the majority of beautiful women in general mostly tend to be white.
don't forget there are real unattractive white pple. actually the majority of people in general are not really attractive.
i mean

See, this is a racist statement. I personally have seen many thousands of black faces in my lifetime, and all of the black people I have seen had different lips from each other. There is no such thing as "black lips"--black people can have thin or thick lips, them all having thick lips is a racist stereotype that is not accurate. This is what we mean when we say it is racist to have these preferences--you have this picture in your head of what a black person looks like that is inaccurate and comes from the racist influence of ignorant white culture that you steep yourself in.
Assuming all the people of a certain race are going to have the same features is racist. I am continually amazed at the level of denial and ignorance in this thread. Like, I knew WP had some dedicated racist members but I had no idea the amount of subconscious racism that people are willing to live with and perpetuate rather than acknowledge and try to change about themselves. It's really disappointing and makes me embarrassed right now to be white and also to be a member of this forum.
You guys in denial are making me look bad by association and I don't appreciate that. Get over yourselves and realise that people of other races are not a monolith and don't all look the same and have the same features. It's pathetic and gross and wrong and damaging to have ideas like that. White people are not the only kinds of people who vary from individual to individual in their facial features--this fact should not have to be stated to adults with working brains that are not cognitively challenged, there is NO excuse for perpetuating that kind of racist ignorance.
I think it is a case of if someone has not seen/met someone of a particular ethnicity they found very attractive, they assume that means they biologically can't see anyone of that ethnicity as attractive seems like a bit of a leap to me but I suppose its possible. Also one might have more or less exposure to people of other ethnicity depending on where they live.

I wouldn’t touch any of them with a stick, but not because I don’t find them attractive (I find them all attractive); I wouldn’t because I wouldn’t expect them to appreciate being touched by me with a stick and I’m sure it wouldn’t end up well for me.

she's overrated as fk byonce i mean. it's not necessary to like her or not. i am only talking about sex lol
anyway
i find kitty perry ,jennifer lwarence ,kate winslet extremely sexy and oh jennifer lopez the younger version (watch im glad the official video and look at dat vicious built-in ***
i also would love to rachel ray for some reason shes verey lovely
other than that i hate everything that's ameriucan
sexual taste usually extends to phenotypes at large..............
Um you're insanely racist congrats. "Smells like soy sauce." What the f**k?
i meant what i said in terms of "chemistry" and that pheremonal familiarity people have with certain other people.
some people in their own subtle body odor (as long as it is not sweat based) attract others to them.
some people like that vomity milky smell that babies heads have and they are attracted to it (due to maternal instincts no doubt), but i find it utterly abhorrent.
anyway i have refined the description of that vague smell that seems to ooze from the pores of asian people as more of a sesame seed oil wokky smell, and i just do not like it. it does not make me wretch, but is is not something that meshes with my particular taste.
i do not know how that is racist. what is offensive about soy sauce? flat faces are useful in some environments i am sure, and i do not think a flat face is inferior to a normal face. it is just not my cup of tea. i am just one person who is a nobody in the mountains of nowhere, so it is not necessary to get cranky about me.
i suppose it goes back to primordial conditioning. when i was little, i always thought black people were simple dirty, and wondered why they never washed it off. their skin looked greasy and oily to me and i just did not have any desire to touch it.
i know now that i was wrong, but i never developed an attraction to that color because it does not look as soft and smooth as white skin. it looks greasy or something, but i do not judge a person as worthy to be my friend on skin color in any way.
it's just the physical attraction thing i am talking about.
you are going off the rails i think. you are indeed a cranky little thing.
but society tells me that sticks of celery are good for me but i hate them and i will not eat them. society tells me that cheese burgers are bad for me but i will eat them because i like them.
whatever. cheers to the celery eaters and the burger eaters alike. who cares?
you are focusing on the word "preference" with respect to a holistic notion, whereas i was only commenting on physical attraction.
i think everyone, no matter what race, no matter what class, no matter how nice or bad a personality, is equal.
no one's life is worth more than anyone else's life, and i have always known that and believed it.
i also think animals lives are as important as human ones. they see and feel too.
As someone a quarter black, I definitely don't think having a preference is racist.
Though personally, I am attracted to all races.
I prefer girl's the same as me, 1/4 or 1/2 black and with the same phenotype - same dark brown hair, dark brown eyes, light tan skin, etc. but this preference doesn't matter too much and I can be attracted to all races, skin colors and hair colors.
I'd be a little disappointed/offended if a girl isn't attracted to me for my ethnicity, but it's not something I'll choose to dwell on.
I've never actually found out how it feels to be rejected directly based-on race, so I'm only making a very likely accurate prediction of how I'd feel.
'Negro' isn't necessarily racist, either.
It throws me off a little sometimes, maybe especially since it's such a rare and archaic/outdated term, but when I think about it I don't actually find it offensive.
N•gger pi55e5 me off more, especially the young white kids here who use it to refer to their mates.
And no, it's not a hypocritical 'only other black people can call me n•ggér' thing, I just don't use the word at all and it's actually quite rare here anyway.
What's definitely offensive to me though, is the short term for Aboriginal Australian - Abó.
It's never used positively and more often than not a derogatory term some White Australians resort to.
b9:
It's a bit odd you'd think people of a certain race smell of something so specific.
Are you trying to say that is simply the closest thing you could compare the smell to?
E.g. the natural smell of most Asian women you've encountered is akin to some sort of soy sauce or other condiment of some kind?
I'm not throwing the 'racist' card here at you, just a little intrigued.
I've always thought the natural smell of most people is individual and not determined by race, but then again in my experiences I have noticed a pattern of it, though it might just be because family members tend to be relatively similar in pheromonal output, so maybe it's not due to their race in my experiences but simply because they're of the same family.
