hummm. . you ever have someone bigger and stronger than you with testosterone flooding through his bloodstream raging at you while you wonder if you are going to be able to get away before he starts swinging? If you haven't, then don't talk about someone not being 'strong enough' to be blunt.

That's an interesting point. But then, he probably has known exactly that situation, as males are far more likely to be the victims of physical violence from other males. It's rarely commented on, because it is so common, regarded as a normal part of a boys upbringing.

Fair enough. So what does a man do in that situation? He either fights or he says something conciliatory like "hey, hey I'm not trying to start any trouble here, no worries, no problem" and takes a step backward to show he isn't about to fight.

What I bet he doesn't do is bring out the straightforward honesty and say what he's really thinking such as "you are way out of line and what you just did/said made me angry but you are also a lot bigger than me". Such honesty would be suicidal. So unless he's prepared for a physical confrontation, he says something conciliatory to prevent a fight.

Which was pretty much sinsboldly's point. Anybody- woman or man- will say something conciliatory if not strictly true if that's what they need to do to avoid a physical confrontation with somebody sure to win the fight.
