I'm very glad someone posted this thread, because it reminded me of how I used to be when I was younger (read: tender age of 18 ). I used to believe that once a girl went on a date with me, I was set for life. Obviously, it's anything but true. In the dating world, pretty much everything is to be taken at face value. Going to a date with someone means just that: you're going on a date with them. It doesn't mean you're set for life, it doesn't mean they'll always be interested in you, it means only one thing: they're interested in you at that moment, just enough to enjoy a few hours of your company. Things may not go anywhere after the first date, and that is fine. Also, it's important to remember that at no point in the dating process, is anyone obligated to give the other person anything beyond basic respect as a human being. Case in point: if the girl had sex with the guy on a first date, he does not have to call unless he wants to start dating; or if the guy bought the girl a $200 seven-course dinner on a first date, she does not have to give anything other than a "thank you". In both cases, giving something, be it sex or an overpriced dinner, was done by one's own choice, and since the other party did not demand it, they're not required to give an equivalent in return.

As Erisad pointed out, when you "have a date", you don't actually have a date until that person is standing in front of you at the place where you agreed to meet. Cancellations can happen as late as five minutes 'til, so expect that to happen until you see that person walking toward you at the agreed-upon place. With that said, don't keep calling to check if the date is still on. I, personally, use a "two confirmations rule" for first dates: first time the night before, and the second time one hour before. For the second date and forward, I use only one confirmation the night before. I also have a very strict cancellation forgiveness policy: after a girl cancels on me twice, I pretty much tell her not to contact me again (this policy applies to first dates only).
