I saw "Adam" last month. I feel that because the women did not go with Him and reject Him in the end, it says the people with AS can not handle romantic relationships. This streotypes people with AS. I have been trying to have a romantic relationship all my life. I don't need someone that has seen that movie to freak out and run away when I tell them I have AS.

Anyone else feel the same?

Maybe, but such a stereotype already exists. At least the ending showed how Adam improved on his social deficits and Beth sending him that book implies they could get back together again.

There was alot of subtext in the ending, and I don't think everybody here saw that. Subtext is not something people on the spectrum pick up on very well until they are older very often, but it is not something most NT get very easily as well. That is why most people like big budget hollywood films and cheap pulp novels, as supposed to art films and russian literature. Subtext is not something that is easy to grasp at first, you have to read into it. In this case the subtext was rather thin though, typical indie film fodder.

Yeah, I was sorta bummed that they didn't get together because I was thinking, "Do they really intend that people on the spectrum can't have good relationships?" But I like how he does learn some new skills that were shown at the end. This shows that people on the spectrum can still learn and grow socially. Personally, I thought Beth had some family-of-origin issues of her own that contributed to her decision too.

A lot of movies do what you described. I don't really have much to add but I thought it was a good movie that showed his great strength when going to California alone. It was more than just watching a movie about a guy with ASD.

I haven't seen Adam yet. Move had no publicity in my area; most people here probably never heard of it but the reviews I've read made him sound like he's much more high functioning than most Aspies. He had lots of special skills/smarts because of his interest that most don't have. i gather that the ending wasn't realistic because they didn't hate each other.
