It's funny that you guys are mocking Catholicism in this thread, because we Catholics can annul our marriages within the first year provided that it hasn't been consummated.

Marriages can be annulled in most states in the US.

When I read this, I thought it was a DSM-V reference.

I was actually confirmed RC. I'm just hung up on that mohawk though, it was epic.

I would suspect that part of the reason that 50% of marriages end in divorce is that people are pressured into marriage too soon, probably by religious/cultural factors.

If people waited two years (after the beginning of a relationship) before getting married there would be far fewer divorces as only those who were serious (and compatible) would get married.

A temporary licence seems to be an overly complex workaround.

I think the argument has always been that with the option people don't try, just like people who've lived together with all the benefits and no ring for years get used to it and once they cross the line there's no sense of the additional vows, ring, family event and smorgasbord with open bar really meaning anything. The way things are drifting though I don't know what to make of it. I suppose what'll happen is this will be tried, studied, documented, and if its a terrible idea we'll soon find out why.

I don't see people inviting their friends/family to the ceremony for a 2 year marriage (even less to the follow-up extension if they are still together).

It will not be much easier to separate the couple at the end of the two years if they have intertwined their lives (such as bought property together/ made children).

Can one be made up on the spot to last, oh, I don't know, twenty minutes or so?

If there's any real upside it will perhaps be would-be lawyers changing major.
