I think that the internet can become a real crutch and trap at times. It is something that really has to be kept in check. I just was outside gathering lemons in the sunshine from the lemon tree and that was a nice experience. But somehow being on the internet can just suck you in.

Maybe I can wean myself away from WP by taking my laptop outside and use WiFi until the battery dies. At that point, I'll probably then blink, look around and say "Hey, I remember this!" IIRC its called non-virtual reality. Then, if its a nice day, I'll be able to resist the urge to immediately run inside and reconnect!"

I think it's more to do with enjoying and embracing the present moment without being over analytical or having any distractions, worries or a sense of urgency. I sometimes wonder this with people who are always on their phones or concerned about idle chatter such as gossip or worrying, I wonder if they ever stop and realize there's more to life.

Yes, I think that being on the internet too much makes real life seem less exciting somehow. So that is where the danger lies...

I think that perhaps the internet does something real and physical, such as overstimulate the mind visually and intellectually/emotionally.

It is said to increase dopamine levels. This leads to the brain adapting- it then needs this sort of stimulation to produce enough dopamine- real life wont have the same effect anymore. Though if someone took a break from the internet the brain would adjust back.

This is how junk food works too. It has components which hijack a number of reward systems in the brain, and it has more of these components than ordinary, healthy food.

So if a person eats junk food often enough over a certain period of time, the brain stops producing reward chemicals in response to say, fruit, and instead needs a candy bar for the same reward chemical response, or some fatty meal instead of a healthy casserole.

Anyway will tune back out of the nerd tangent I just went off on.

You're right, Ryan has been claiming you've been doing a piss poor job recently at gazing at his navel. You need to stop neglecting your practice or you're going to atrophy all your real life skills.

who's Ryan? :P

The more somebody posts on WP, the more likely they are to get banned.

Since posting on this form makes you less date-able does that also count for the other forums on WP

Someone with a navel who's been feeling particularly neglected... or a figment of my social imagination. Your choice.

this cracked me up!

i think i spend a massive amount of time on the internet, and expecially on WP, but i am also extremely busy IRL with activities that involve other people. so it is kind of a nice distraction but not all-consuming. i think it's possible to find a balance sometimes, as long as a person is not too obsessive.

people on here have helped me a lot with my problems, so i have found the site to be of value.

OMG, you're not kidding - I went to a play last night (by myself of course) and deliberately left my iPad in the car. Usually, when I do something like this (nice restaurant, concert, etc) I am posting on WP while I'm there. I felt "naked" without it, I just stood around fiddling with my ghetto cellphone avoiding eye contact with everyone and terrified that someone would try and talk to me...

Once when I was at a concert in NYC, some guy actually told me to put my iPad away and enjoy myself.

Yes I did.

When the band was onstage I had something else to do besides feel awkward...

The more I read advice and posts here, the more I am becoming out of touch with reality, like when you read flow of posts of people saying "I like this type X of guys too!!" (ie. I like geeks too!) or like 'I don't care if he drives or not" (random example from various threads), to the extent that would make you think that your current self is totally fine and you'll be fine.

But once confronted with reality, I find the total opposite again ...and again....

Wrongplanet simply doesn't reflect reality.

Hehe, you got be careful in thinking that the views from people on the Wrong Planet is the same as the views from people on the Right Planet.

and the views on the Wrong Planet wouldn't necessarily reflect the actions/choices on the Right Planet by the same people.

Yep, people who lie in the Right Planet to make people feel better probably don't hesitate to lie in the Wrong Planet to make people feel better. (I'm just joking there, I understand that what one theoretically doesn't "really care" about in their mind actually is something they care about in real life. Some just don't really know themselves that well.)
