Some time ago I used my pic but didn't think it was a good picture. I have thought about putting up another one though.

Is this where I sing the chorus or should we let the thread get back on topic?

I think there's nothing wrong about asking for someone's picture, but I've been told (outside this website, meaning: I've been told by NTs), that it's considered invasive. But like I said, people here seem to be ok with it.

Restricting avatars to personal photos doesn't give enough possibilities. There is more to us than how we look. Sometimes a picture that isn't even a person, is required to express some aspect of personality.

I don't like my face lately. Also, to my taste, using a face as an avatar is gauche.

No, no, quite the contrary, your avatar is great. And you are very good looking.

It's just... I don't know how to say this... I thought it was someone on the electric chair. Like a frame from a music video or something.

The electric chair gives a whole new dimension to my avatar. I never thought befunky.com could give so much meaning to photos.

But you said I look good. Two women said I look good on this day. Unless I count my mother and other relatives, I think I finally got directly complimented by more than five women in my whole life. YAY!!

Hey, I thought you were a model from a music video.

I do not have my pic up because I'm kind of shy & physical appearance is completely unimportant to me in a partner so putting up a pic of myself seems a little hypocritical to me

Well, this isn't a dating site, and posting (or refusing to post) your picture isn't really related to getting a partner.

But not all people want to see your picture for flirting purposes. I have a tendency to imagine people as their avatars, especially if they have a person on their avatar. So I guess I like to know what a person truly looks like, to imagine them that way. Maybe it's weird and maybe it's just me.

There's more to it. I think deciding to message people or not based on their pix is extremely shallow & looks do NOT matter to me at all & I do NOT get why looks are important to others either. I'll give out my pic to people after I chat with em a while if they ask but I do NOT get why it matters to them

Uh... Couldn't the same be said for us single women? I mean, OP, you don't have your location set and I don't have myself as my avatar. At least, right now I don't.

What someone chooses as an avatar can say so much more about them than a face shot ever could. I like it that way.

Well, some people care about physical appearance and want to know if they physically like a person before they decide if they want to date them. Or maybe they see it as a way of getting to know them?

For friendship, it's irrelevant. I told you, the only reason I want to know is that I kind of want to imagine this person if I'm regularly interacting with them.

This is true.

I think my avatar makes me seem like a hipster or an emo (which wasn't a desired effect), though.

Hipster never crossed my mind with your avatar.

Same here but emo never crossed my mind either. I thought you just really liked that pair of tennis-shoes because they were lucky or something

Honestly? It was taking to bloody long to crop and resize it to the right dimensions and pixels for the avatar settings, so I got bored and gave up.

Emo didn't cross my mind, either. It looks like an artsy photo with lots of meaning behind it.

But... that could just be my artsy fartsy brain at work. :P
