Because, other things are within your control. If you're not able to get a girl, that means you at the moment anyway lack much control over it. It's like trying to concentrate on the weather if by worrying about it you could change it. If you find something fun enough, like, I don't know...hang gliding, racecar driving, or inventing Tesla deathrays in your garage, or some kind of ridiculous activity like that, it's a bit easier to at the end of the day feel accomplished about yourself, even without a girl.
For some people it does work, Nikola Tesla lived to be like 90 doing that. He'd just go invent all kinds of stuff, without thinking about women. He said in his whole life, he never touched a woman (had intercourse) and his excuse was, women would drain away his creative energy and he'd be not as good at science. He sort of made himself a martyr of sorts for science, he decided to forgo women just to get more science done. You don't really know the psychology going on with him, whether he was lonely or sad about it or whatever, but, undeniably, he got a lot of stuff done, without a woman.
So that's the reasons I see why people would say such a thing.
