Oh, definitely take things slow! You might even have to go back to square one again and work your way up from there. That's what my boyfriend and I had to do and it was the best decision that we made, because now he is truly comfortable with the way things are going and is happy with the relationship (as am I). Good luck!

Ah, that's good advice, after exploring forums and getting informed opinions (most of my girl friends don't really understand our relationship and so are quick to tell me he's not worth it) II would be very willing to go back to the beginning and try again. I'm happy it worked out for you two!

And yeah PastFixations that makes more sense, Barbara Gordon it is!

Thank you. I hope it works out well for you guys! :)

I'm sorry, but don't listen to your girlfriends. It makes my heart hurt to think of all that I'd be missing out on if I had others telling me to stay away from my boyfriend and I listened to them! :( You should listen to your own heart instead.

Alright, can't be f****d writing some massive post... So lets make this simple.

He's scared he's going to hurt you.
For your sake, he doesn't want to be in a relationship at this point... 8O
Just to confirm it though, I would talk to him and ask if this is how he feels..

Don't worry I like peope being concise and saying exactly what they mean, thanks.

Also thanks to everyone else for their advice...just as an update I thought I'd share that I've contacted him and we're getting together next Thursday. He still seems super withdrawn though compared to the beginning of our relationship, so I guess I'll see how it goes on Thursday! If things don't pick up a bit after that there's nothing else I can do if he remains closed off to me.

Hey everyone (again),

So I'm bringing up this thread again, as me and Batman finally got back together. I didn't see him for about 3 months over the summer, but we kept in contact over text message and occasionally phone, him initiating contact as well as me. I thought if I just gave it time, we would get back together...and finally this Wednesday he called me late-ish at night and asked to meet. He said that I'm smarter than him (and that scared him as he's usually smarter than others), and that I'm going to do great things, and that he doesn't deserve to be with me. He said that he was scared of me, to a certain extent, due to what I made him feel but that he was an idiot for losing me and said that he wanted to try and be in a real relationship. He also cited the fact that, due to some sort of moral chivalry he has, he didn't want to be the one to take my virginity as he is quite self-deprecating and doesn't believe that he deserves to be "that guy"...even though he wants to from a purely physical standpoint, and we have engaged in somewhat serious sexual activities (just not gone all the way). We ended up just sleeping in each others arms all night, in our clothes...but since Wednesday he has, again, completely withdrawn. He answers about 50% of my texts with one word answers, and won't take my calls. I'm never sure what to do when he does this (is withdrawal after intense emotional experiences very common?), and am also not sure how to communicate to him that I do think he's wonderful and have decided he's the one I want to be with, when he has such an unreasonably high opinion of me, and a very low one of himself. I know he's scared of hurting me again but I wish he knew that the worst way to hurt me is to cut me off.

Any advice would be very much appreciated, thanks again everyone.

Don't try to convince him otherwise (about his opinion of himself), but don't confirm it either. Just tell him that you like him for who he is, everything about him, and that is what matters. He probably wouldn't believe it. (I wouldn't. Didn't.) But I guess it's worth a try, right?

Make sure you're clear about what your goals are when you begin speaking to him again.

If you two have different goals and continue down this same road again, it will end badly.

Make sure you're on the same wavelength. If he wants to be friends, you can be friends. You can offer the idea of being something "more", not necessarily a relationship, but not really friends either. I find that helps keep things calm because then there aren't any preconceived ideals to live up to.

Hey everyone

So I just have an experience I would like to share, am looking for a bit of advice. I recently started dating someone who has Aspergers (Im NT though the fact that the two major relationships in my life have been with someone on the spectrum leads me to question to what degree). Fascinated mostly by the fact that I'm quite intelligent (I study biophysics, and science is my greatest passion) he felt he could relate to me. For a few days he texted me day and night and we had four "dates" the first week we started seeing each other, all initiated by him. Over the course of a month he introduced me to his friends and invited me to events with his family. After that month of seeing each other I brought up that I wanted a commitment proportional to physical intimacy, and wanted to introduce him to my friends. He completely closed off, mostly ignoring me for three weeks. I tried asking him if he wanted to stop seeing me but he assured me he liked me, because I liked math and physics. I tried reaching out to him but the same unresponsive behavior continued so assuming he no longer liked me I broke up with him over facebook chat (he likes electronic communication over personal, I wasn't being cruel). A conversation I had hoped would provide closure for me turned into three hours of us not understanding what the other one really wanted, after he asked me to "explain" why I was doing this. He said again he liked me but was "bad with people" and that "he was unsure about how to go about dating me because he was out of his emotional depth". I told him he had set a precedent with the constant interaction and meeting his family but he said he didn't understand why that meant he wanted a relationship. He referred to me as beautiful but said he wanted me as a friend, just as someone who he could talk about science with. I didn't understand why he wanted me as a friend if we couldn't also have the romantic element that we once had (we had much better sexual physical chemistry than verbal, verbal was almost non existent when not through online social media). I thought he was just saying he wanted to be friends for the sake of being nice. I ended the conversation defensively by saying I didn't wish to have any continued interaction with him.

I believe I've hurt him by saying I don't want to see him anymore, and would like try and reach out to him again, but I know neither of us is going to change what we want and am afraid of hurting/confusing him and myself further. I would never expect him to change. Basically I have this little metaphor going, about how dating/(being friends with?) him would be like dating Batman. On the one hand I know that he would always need privacy and alone time and wouldn't really share his feelings but on the other hand I don't want to not date/be friends with Batman, because he's super unique and awesome and can talk about multiverse theory with me. And wouldn't want him to stop being Batman for me because that's what makes him so special. He's one of the only people I feel I can really relate to and, knowing the he feels the same, I'm not entirely willing to him go. I'm just a little emotionally demanding and inquisitive so logically we don't work.

So, my question is, do you guys think should I bother reaching out to him? Or do you think it would be best for the both of us if Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne just left each other alone?

It's possible that he feels it's just moving too fast, or that he's either asexual or even repulsed by sex. Therefore, your suggestion of being more intimate with him frightens and confuses him. He might just not know how to proceed, so rather than lose you entirely, he said he wants to just be friends in an attempt to make it clear to you that he's not ready for that intimacy. Apparently it didn't work out the way he hoped. Of course, this is all just my speculation. Only he can give you the answer.

Have you tried, or considered trying, to ask him the questions you're asking us, and explain them to him in the exact same way? Maybe you could just link him to this page, although the fact that you put it here might bother him too... Explain to him thoroughly how much you like him and don't want him to change. Be willing to move at his pace. You may never have a romantic relationship with him. He might not even be capable of having one, or he might be extremely frightened by the thought of one. You'll have to ease him, very slowly, into an intimate romantic relationship, if one with him is possible at all.
