People distinguish between infatuation and love as if it were two separate phenomena and that distinction is very subjective and unclear in definition. But really its the same thing, just in different circumstances. Infatuation is just less rooted by circumstances in reality, whereas love is most often defined as 'valid' if it occurs in association with a longer relationship and if it is reciprocal.

If you are in love you will feel like you are on drugs. An array of neurochemical changes will happen. Your perception will be altered, you will become somewhat obsessed with the other person, most of your thoughts regarding that person are delusional or borderline-delusional but you won't notice that at first while in love, if at all. By delusional I mean just that, you will see, perceive and feel things about the person that are entirely unfounded by real circumstances and proper evaluation, just for the sake of removing obstacles in the bonding process. Because the changes are so explicit, people say that you 'just know' when it happens (which is maybe hard to believe but true).

There are no real signs you can watch out for. One day you just have a normal romantic interest in a person (who is somewhat frequently) around you and then something happens, e.g. he/she says something you really like about him/her but did not know about, and it flips a switch and you will notice within a day or two that you are in love. It can also happen more subtly though from what people told me.

Love can possibly be extremely detrimental to your mental health, depending on what kind of person you are. It puts you out of control and it does its thing on its own, which is to force you to bond with the person you are in love with. If that's not possible or you resist you will suffer consequences. And its also addictive. The longer you aren't around the person, the more likely you will develop withdrawal symptoms.

I have only ever been "in love" once. My psychologist at the time saw it as more of a deep infatuation though.

I don't think f I've ever been in love for real. Although I hope to be someday. The idea of it seems quite nice :)

Infatuation would be more of a scientific term for love, but really, as the last poster right before has said, there isn't really an objective distinction between love and infatuation. They're basically the same thing, and whether you use this word or that to describe the intensity of your feelings for someone else, it's really basically the same sort of feeling probably varying in degrees but more or less the same thing.

Yes, I am (Not an official relationship yet, although it seems to be getting close!) - and let me tell you it's a rollercoaster in more ways than one.

( Wait, Rollercoaster is just a combination of the words "Roller" and "Coaster" - has anyone else noticed that? )

I like to think of it in terms of Positive, Neutral and Negative.

Positive seems to be whenever you get that weird feeling in your chest and just want to hug them as tight as you can...

Usually accompanied with stimming.

Neutral is basically still in love, but not towards any other extremes. You'll probably spend most of your time like this. That said, it still feels good ^^

Negative is when you're worried something bad might have happened to said person. That said, I can't say for when something actually DOES happen, but this is usually involved with another feeling in your chest; some possible crying and even more stimming.

Oh, and it feels terrible too.

I am currently in love with a man I met at my university. He is very intelligent (he is a chemist and does research for the university while he is a student there). He's 23 and I'm the only girlfriend he's ever had. When you love someone you love them for more than their looks; you want to take care of and nurture that person, support them in every way. You adore the tiniest things about them. Finally, while you're sexually attracted to them, sex isn't the focus of the relationship but rather the icing on the cake.

Best description in this thread.

But....I don't think I have....I have crushed on people sure...but I have never felt like I have found someone perfect yet (someone came close...but then I realised the flaws) to my needs.

I doubt I will ever find love to be honest, but I don't discourage people from not falling in love.

That description could easily be that of infatuation. It being the best description is simply an opinion.

i am not interested in love. love has no boundaries or other defining borders that can define it's shape.

what is "love" anyway? i know that is an age old question, and a hackneyed one too, but what is "love?"

love to me means "a devotion to the protection of the satisfaction and happiness that the animal i love currently feels or could aspire toward

'.

i think all animals are innocent and i "love" every animal i see, but that is not the same as developing a biologically impelled penile erection that arouses sexual desires.

"love" to me means protection of, and acceptance into my heart of some being who i feel that i am lucky to know.

i never loved a person like you all do with your penises, but i know what love is in my own way.

my girlfriend tammy has had a holiday into debauchery with another man who i was unconcerned with, and she wants to be my friend much more due to that experience.

i told her that i will always provide whatever she wants, and i still love her (obviously), and i think that after experiencing other men she has chosen me because i do am not suicidally dependent on her approval.

"love" is something that humans feel, but i am not human in a way, so i feel a duty to protect the happiness of those who i am programmed to defend. and those people are the ones that ascribe "humanity" to me.as a reward for my concern about them.

whatever... i am going to bed ow without tammy. i wish i could say elsewise.

You're just trying too hard to be way too different from us.

i do not "try" to be different than you. i just am different to you.
who is "us"? i am me and anything else is too hard for me to understand.

whetever.. i will never think in terms of "us" or "we" because i am only me. and i think only what i think, and i have no time for external ideas or questions that ask me to analyze if i am wrong.

you can continue on your rail, and i will continue on mine, and ne'er the twain shall meet.

i have no problem with that .
