Again, I didn't see the movie, but is she a mail-order bride? She seems to have another stake in marrying him than just love

i remember reading a thread either on here or another forum where a chinese girl and white guy(who was rich, good looking, respectful) were in love however the girl's parents didn't accept the white guy bc he wasnt Chinese.

I've noticed that about Chinese, too. Especially from Taiwan.

In this case, however, the woman had a very low social status in China: I think that she didn't finish high school, was looked down upon as a "country bumpkin", etc. Plus, at age 30, was considered an old maid.

It could be a matter low-status people from both countries getting together, and, in both cases, improving their statuses.

I remember a Taiwanese woman once commenting that it was usually the ugly Chinese girls who were marrying Americans, and that their husbands were quite handsome. Americans typically regard the situation as being the exact opposite.

They met through an on-line dating site. He went to China, proposed, and sponsored her on a fiancée visa. After arriving in the USA, she then had a limited time during which she would decide whether to go ahead and marry him, or to return to China. The documentary focuses primarily on this time frame.

I have not seen the movie, but I wonder if the protagonist might have some form of HFA.

My wife is Asian (Philippine). She is the only woman I've ever met who seems to instinctively understand my Aspieness. I wonder if ths is common among all Asian cultures, because I seem to get along better with Asians in general than any other ethnic group.

Same here perhaps why is their logic.

I hadn't thought about that, but it seems plausible--the way he collects things, and the way that he says things on camera that most people would probably want to filter out.

Also, his tenacity to achieve his goal.

If he had gone 30 years in the opposite direction, that would have also made for a fascinating documentary.

A man marries a foreign woman who is half his age because local women have no interest in his lack of money ... big yawn ...

Only after I announced my engagement did any of the local women begin to pay attention to me. I guess that they found out that just because I lived frugally, it did not mean that I was poor.

Men think they can find the fountain of youth by marrying a younger woman. Actually the opposite is true. To find the fountain of youth you have to spread the wealth around.

Bullsnot. Spending money does not make one youthful.

Having a younger, estrogenous woman around seems to stimulate an older man's testosterone production, and thus restore and maintain his youthful vigor. He may still die in his sixties, but he'll at least die a man.

I'll keep my wealth, thank you.

'Ere now, mate! What's the cost of a pint these days? If it's my turn to pay the barkeep, then I'll pay!

What's yours?

Spending money worked wonders for Ebenezer Scrooge.

Do you often cite fictional (thus non-existent) characters as 'evidence' for your claims?

Ebenezer Scrooge was based on a true story.

No, it wasn't!

In his diaries, Charles Dickens himself stated that Scrooge stems from a grave marker that he first saw in 1841, while taking an evening walk in the Canongate Kirkyard in Edinburgh, Scotland. The headstone was for the vintner Ebenezer Lennox Scroggie, a relative of Adam Smith, who had won the catering contract for the visit of George IV to Edinburgh and the first contract to supply whisky to the Royal Navy. The marker identified Scroggie as a "meal man" (corn merchant), but Dickens misread this as "mean man", due to the fading light and his mild dyslexia. Dickens also wrote that it must have "shrivelled" Scroggie’s soul to carry "such a terrible thing to eternity". The grave marker was lost during construction work at part of the Canongate Kirkyard in 1932. Several theories have been put forward as to where Dickens got additional inspiration for the character, one of which is obviously yours.

Do you ever look up the truth, or do you make it all up as you go along?

A pint of BrewDog Punk IPA (5.6%), if you're buying. (This is rarely sold in pubs here, as it's just too strong and niche. Often see bottles in the supermarkets, though.) BrewDog have several bars, but I bet it's over £4 per pint in one of those places.

I'll have a pint of Hawkshead Bitter (3.7%) and like it. A regular price of a pint up here is about £3 (or US$4.85 in U.S. money after tax and all).

I'm presently drinking Dark Star Sunburst (4.8%; 500ml bottle) though - a very hoppy pale ale.

It must be hard for Englishmen to save money, if they feel obliged to buy grog for everyone.

It doesn't matter what the name of the miser is but it is a known fact that if you are good at saving money you can build a fortune just by being stingy and investing your money wisely.

Obviously, one does not grow wealthy by giving money away.
