I'm kind of "meh" about the topic - I personally don't use them myself, as I'm already used to using the actual name all the time.

I HATE pet names. They are weird and make no sense. Especially when I barely know the guy who is saying them.

I have recently re-joined the hoards of people on online dating and am talking to 3 guys right now. The most promising of which unfortunately lives on the other side of the state (and for Texas that is a long distance). But one of the guys I am talking to and most of the guys who send out "Hey" messages call me babe, or sugar, or honey-pie.

I DO NOT LIKE!! !! !

Why do people feel like they should be used? I respond to my name, not some contrived word that is not associated with me.

I agree. Its irritating. I include 'dude' among the list.

I do like nicknames though.

@ Dantac: I agree with you. My mom sometimes calls both me and my sister by pet names, even though we tell her to not do so anymore. Whenever this happens, my sister says, "Uh Mom...I'm not a little kid anymore, so stop calling me stuff like that."

I don't mind when people call me "Dude", but I hate it when old people call me "Kid."

I'll admit this. Because my sister is a tomboy, I call her "Sir."
Because my mom tends to be overbearing towards both me and my sister, we both call our mother "Master."

I don't mind "dude" "babe" "hon" "shuhg" "dear" "boy" "mr. man" "sir" "honey" "bicycle guy" "i like your bike" "that is ok I don't remember your name either" "gamer" "brainiac" "absent minded professor" "fire bug" "gulper" "apple" "sugar" or any of that. I love being called hon, or shuhg, or dear, or babe, it lifts my spirits. I wouldn't mind master or sensei, but that is probably never going to happen.

I don't mind dude or stuff like "hey man" etc. but people try stuff like hun and babe and sweetie and if you don't have a Southern accent and identify as a woman, I'm so not OK with those names.

My friend J and I call each other the most vile names, that's our system of pet names.
