I like cooking for people and doing little things, like surprising them by putting notes in their coat pocket. But, mostly my thing is sticking with people through tough times and being supportive in more tangible ways. I kind of drop the ball when it comes to flowery stuff.

The whole walk on the beach thing sounds quite romantic (beaches are gorgeous places).
That makes me think of something a guy did for me years ago. We were both students at the time and he'd just gotten laid off from his job, so I asked him not to get me anything for my birthday. He insisted, so I told him that if he was going to do anything, not to spend more than $10.
I went over to his place on my birthday, while it was ice-cold and sleeting outside, and he showed up at the door in a Hawaiian shirt and swim trunks. I walked in and he'd turned his living room into 'a tropical getaway' for the night.
He'd moved all the furniture into another room and gotten this huge tarp and a couple bags of sand to make a beach, made cardboard palm trees and borrowed tiki torches and a cd with hula music from someone. He'd even gotten plastic lei's and baked a pineapple-flavored birthday cake, which we ate while sitting on beach towels in the torch-light.
Best birthday ever. And, dirt cheap.
Man, was that sand a pain to clean up, though. We were finding it in the carpet for months afterwards. His poor landlord, lol.
